There is something I love about photographing newborns at home.

No packing half the nursery into the car. No trying to get everyone out the door on time with a brand-new baby. And no need for your home (or your family) to be perfectly put together.

We just slow down.

You hold your baby. Curl up together on the couch. Feed them when they're hungry. Take a break when you need one. I’ll offer a little guidance when you need it, but mostly, I photograph the way your family is together.

The yawns. The tiny stretches. The way they curl into your chest. The way your hands seem impossibly big wrapped around them.

Because someday this baby won't fit quite so perfectly against your chest.

And that is the part I want you to remember.

You don't have to wait until life feels calm enough for family photographs.

Honestly, I'm not sure that season exists.

There will always be practices, homework, work deadlines, laundry, appointments, and somebody who can't find their shoes.

Meanwhile, your kids keep changing.

So come as you are.

Bring the wild kid. The shy kid. The kid who wants to be carried. The pr***en who suddenly thinks family pictures are deeply embarrassing. Bring the parents who feel awkward in front of a camera, too.

You do NOT need to show up to your fall family session dressed in matching outfits.

In fact, I'd rather you didn't. 😉

Instead, think coordinated, not matching. Mix colors, textures, layers, and a little pattern. You don't need everyone wearing the same color for your photographs to feel cohesive.

Most importantly?

Wear something that actually feels like you.

If your child spends the entire session tugging at an itchy sweater or you're afraid to sit down because of your outfit, none of us are going to have much fun.

Comfort + personality wins every time.

There are photographs we take because everyone looks nice.

And then there are photographs we keep because they feel like our family.

The way your child still reaches for your hand.

The gap where a baby tooth used to be.

The way siblings make each other laugh.

The kid who absolutely cannot stand still.

The way they fit against you right now, even though somehow they’re getting bigger every single day.

Those are the things I’m looking for when I photograph families.

Fall Petite or Full Family Session: which one is right for you?

There really isn’t a “better” option. It depends on what your family needs this year.

🍂 A Fall Petite Session might be perfect if you want a quick update, a handful of beautiful photographs, and something easy to fit into a busy fall weekend.

🌿 A Full Family Session gives us more time to settle in, explore, play, and photograph all those little interactions that unfold when nobody is watching the clock.

Petites are 10 minutes and include 5 edited digital images for $225.

Full sessions are longer, more story-driven, and include your complete gallery.

Both are relaxed. Both leave room for movement and real personalities. And neither requires perfectly behaved children. 😉

One of the things I hear most from parents before a family session is some version of:

“But what if my kids don’t cooperate?”

Here’s the good news: they don’t really need to. ❤️

Your kids can move. They can be silly. They can need a minute to warm up. They can snuggle into you, wander off to investigate something interesting, or decide that running is much more fun than standing still.

That’s all okay.

My fall family sessions in Charlottesville aren’t about getting everyone to behave perfectly for the camera. They’re about creating space for your family to actually be together, with a little guidance from me when you need it.

Because some of my favorite photographs happen after we stop worrying about getting the “perfect” one.

You don't need perfectly behaved kids for family photos.

They can run. They can wiggle. They can be shy or need to stay close to you. They can need a minute. They can make ridiculous faces, wander off to investigate something interesting, or decide that sitting nicely and smiling is absolutely not happening today.

That's okay.

Some of my favorite photographs happen in those in-between moments, when everyone stops worrying about the camera and just gets to be together.
