Capturing a photo like this takes a lot of luck, but also a little planning. I noticed flight paths for high altitude jets that run southwest to northeast over my residence. I also noticed that the rising moon often intersects these flight paths, increasing the chances an aircraft might pass in front of the moon. When conditions are right, I pay attention with my camera ready to capture any "close encounters." The photo was taken with a Canon 7D Mark II, paired with a Sigma 160-600mm telephoto at 600mm. Settings were: shutter priority, 1/2000 sec., f6.3, ISO 400. Post-processing done using Photoshop Elements.

Charleston Aquarium

This is a vacation photo taken at the Charleston Aquarium. I found it to be a challenge getting a sharp, well-lit photo through the aquarium glass. I set this photo in manual focus mode and was able to get a sharp eye. Taken with a OM-5 camera, OM 12-40 F2.8 lens 1/50 sec @ f2.8, ISO 800.

Apparently, the patio of my Charlotte home lies in the flight path of airliners traveling from southwest to northeast, likely flights from Atlanta to destinations like New York and Boston. If the rising moon happens to cross these flight paths, it's possible to capture images like this both during the day and at night. I always make sure I'm ready with my camera when the opportunity arises. The photo was taken with a Sony RX10 Mark IV, at 600mm, f11, 1/500 sec, ISO 500. Cropping and editing were done in Photoshop Elements.
