𝗣𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆

Capturing an airplane crossing in front of the moon takes some luck, but you can improve your chances with a little planning. I've noticed well-traveled flight paths of airliners that pass over my home. I've also noticed the rising moon often intersects those flight paths. When enjoying an evening on my patio, I always have my camera nearby just in case an approaching airliner is on a "collision course" with the moon. You'd be surprised how often that happens. This shot was taken at sunset on Oct. 21 as the jet was on final approach to Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

𝗣𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆

A mockingbird surveyed the park's entrance after a big rainstorm in late-July. I was actually standing inside our nature center and took this through the glass so he wouldn't get spooked away. I'm not sure why, but mockingbirds always hang out at that same spot around the same time when I'm there. Maybe they're saying "see you next time" or maybe they're just singing along. Birds are such connectors to the natural world; the more we respectfully observe them, the more things we can learn about the wider world.

𝗣𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆

Something funny to me is that this was taken right by the county landfill/ recycling center. Who'd have guessed that landfill's had such beautiful sunsets? Sometimes I like to write little haikus with certain photos, so for this one I said:
"A place I once saw,
Full of used tires and bottles,
Never looking up."

Photography is powerful for so many reasons, but I think here it teaches us about using our own perspective. Light and dark can operate as "friends" (and I think concepts of "beauty" and "ugliness" can too). Would we see the moon's radiance without the inky dark sky around it? We couldn't. I'd been to that landfill 50 times, but I never looked up for a sunset, until recently. It's all about where and how you want to see things.

The weather in Charlotte was dicey the night of the eclipse. There were thunderstorms in the area and I could see lightning flashing in the distance as I set up my tripod. My hopes rose when breaks in the clouds started appearing and I captured this image within one of the breaks. Equipment: Canon 7D Mark II, Sigma 150-600 telephoto at full extension. Exposure: Manual, 0.4 seconds, f7.1, ISO 1000. Processing: PhotoShop Elements.
