Today we remember the life of my grandmother, Jan Nelson—to me, Gramma. From Gramma I inherited a love of taking pictures of absolutely everything around me, a love of talking, a love for collecting rocks and seashells, a love for gardening and composting, a love for bold earrings, and a love of birdwatching. Gramma taught me, through word and example, how to listen and approach others with compassion and empathy. She taught me to view no one as lesser than me and to understand that everyone has a story I don’t know. As an adult I came to understand many of the struggles she endured, although I never recall her complaining about them or any of the people around her. She was loving, empathetic, and had a wild and wonderful energy. Even as an introvert, I found her such a joyful person to be around. Although I cannot pretend we got along all the time, she showed me that you don’t have to have a clean sheet to deserve love. As Gramma’s memory began to fade as she battled Alzheimer’s, she never lost her love of her family, constantly trying to make sure we were all accounted for. Even when she had lost her words, her wide, vibrant smile of love and recognition stayed with us as long as she did. I will always miss her Christmas cards with absolutely every inch covered in writing, with my name on the envelope with a huge heart drawn around it, knowing she had put the time and effort into making one for everyone in our huge family.
I wish Gramma could see me working as a photographer, following her example. I hope I can live and follow her example in many other ways as well, although I do not think I could ever use as much ducktape as she did.
