Some moments are better when you don’t know they’re coming.

Ronan brought his family to Jetton Park and, with Lake Norman behind them, got down on one knee on the beach.

She had no idea.

His family did, though—and they were there to witness the whole thing.

These are the moments I love photographing most. Not just the proposal itself, but everything around it: the surprise, the reactions, the laughter, and the people who were there to share it.

Because years from now, the photographs won’t just remind them that she said yes. They’ll remind them who was there when it happened.

One of the biggest mistakes parents make during family photos: asking their kids to smile.

It sounds harmless, but constantly saying “smile,” “look here,” or “sit still” can actually make children more uncomfortable in front of the camera.

Instead, give them something to do.

Play a game.
Tell a joke.
Let them explore.
Pick them up.
Run together.
Talk to them about something they love.

When children are engaged instead of performing, their real personalities tend to come out—and those are usually the photographs parents end up loving most.

A good family photographer shouldn’t have to manufacture every moment.

Your wedding day is one of the few times in life when everyone you love is in the same room.

And yet, it’s surprisingly easy to spend the entire day moving from one thing to the next.

Photos.
Family portraits.
Getting from one location to another.
Making sure everything happens on time.

Before you know it, the day is over.

Your wedding photography shouldn’t require you to spend hours performing for the camera. You should have time to put the camera out of your mind and actually be with the people who came to celebrate with you.

Talk to your grandparents.
Laugh with your friends.
Dance with your parents.
Step away with your spouse for a few quiet minutes.

Those hours with the people you love are the reason you’re having a wedding in the first place.

Be present with the ones you love. The photographs will take care of themselves.

I photograph families differently.

Not because there’s anything wrong with everyone looking at the camera and smiling—but because I think there’s so much more to a family than that one moment.

The way your daughter reaches for your hand. The chaos around the dinner table. Your son laughing at something only he finds funny. The quiet moments you don’t even realize are happening.

Those are the photographs I want to make.

Documentary family photography is about preserving what life actually felt like—not just what it looked like.

Because years from now, I don’t think you’ll care as much about whether everyone was perfectly posed.

You’ll want to remember who they were.

Be present with the ones you love.

Your photographer can’t capture what you don’t experience.

One of the biggest mistakes couples make on their wedding day is trying to make every moment photogenic.

You don’t need to.

The best photographs often happen when you stop thinking about the camera and start being present.

Laugh with your friends.
Hold your partner a little longer.
Dance badly.
Cry if you need to.
Take a breath and actually look around.

As a documentary photographer, my job isn’t to manufacture moments for the sake of a photograph. It’s to notice the moments that are already happening—and preserve them honestly.

Your wedding isn’t a photoshoot. It’s a day you only get once. Be present with the ones you love.

I’m gonna give a little advice today because I think people still need to hear this. When choosing your wedding photographer, don’t just look at their Instagram.

Instagram is a highlight reel. Almost every photographer is going to show you their best images.

Instead, ask to see a full wedding gallery.

Look at how they photograph the entire day—not just the portraits and dramatic ceremony photos.

In my opinion, you are just starting to get experienced after 150+ weddings. I’m talking, highly experienced wedding photographers. Heck, I’m still learning a lot even after 300 weddings/events.

Do you like the way they capture the quiet moments? The family interactions? The in-between moments? The reception? The people you might not even realize were being photographed? The ceremony and couples portraits make up a very small percentage of the day.

And just as importantly, ask yourself:

Does this photographer’s approach match how I want to remember my wedding?

If you want your photographs to feel natural, emotional, and true to the way the day actually happened, make sure you’re choosing someone whose portfolio consistently reflects that—not just someone who has a few beautiful images you love.

When viewing a photographers portfolio, a few things to look for… how well do they handle bad/low lighting conditions? How is their composition throughout the portfolio and how well do they fill(or not fill in some cases)the frame. Are they able to “tell a story” within the photograph? Do their photographs look intentional?

Does their portfolio look consistent? Or does it look like 10 different photographers?

Lastly, watch for photographers using AI generated images in their portfolio. I’ve heard of entire websites being AI photos because the photographer didn’t really have a portfolio yet.

And remember… Your wedding photographer isn’t just creating individual pictures.

They’re creating the visual record of an entire day.

Your wedding photos aren’t really for Instagram.

Of course, I hope you love them enough to share them.

But years from now, I don’t think you’ll care nearly as much about how many people liked your wedding photos.

You’ll care about seeing your dad’s face when he saw you for the first time.

Your grandmother laughing at the reception.

The way your friends looked on the dance floor.

Your spouse holding your hand when nobody else was paying attention.

The little moments you didn’t even know were happening.

That’s why I photograph weddings the way I do.

Not just to create beautiful images for today, but to give you something you can come back to years from now and actually feel the day again.

Be present with the ones you love.

Let the photographs remember the rest.

Some wedding moments are quiet, emotional, and completely unscripted.

This one from Christhel & Topher’s wedding is a favorite — a mother embracing her daughter while everyone around them shares in the moment. No posing, no direction. Just family, emotion, and the kind of fleeting moment that makes documenting a wedding so meaningful.

This is why I love documentary wedding photography. You don’t have to manufacture the moments. You just have to be there when they happen.
