34-weeker Colm
His mom shares of her experience with PPROM (Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes), "It was just a normal Sunday where I p*ed myself at church due to pressure on my bladder during the third trimester…so I thought. I always have a change of clothes in my diaper bag. After the third time of “p*eing myself” that morning, I accept that I will not be able to go out with friends after church because I am out of clothing. Minor inconvenience. No big deal. I pack my daughter and myself into the car and head home, when I p*e myself again. Only this time I realize it’s not urine and the baby isn’t kicking like he normally does after my weekly cup of half-caf at church. I call the clinic and the 24hr nursing line tells me that I need to go to the hospital right away because I may have broken my water. I bargain with the nurse and tell her that I need to get my daughter lunch and clean my car and all of my Sunday chores and she interrupts me to say that it’s already been two hours since my water may have broken and the baby may be stressed. So, I do a U-turn on an empty neighborhood street and head to Presbyterian Main where after monitoring and a physical exam, the staff confirm that I am experiencing PPROM, but the prognosis is good! Unfortunately, I will have to stay at the hospital until delivery at 34 weeks which is in exactly one weeks time. After a very painful shot in my bottom and a dose of antibiotics, I check myself out of the hospital against medical advice and give my word to staff that I will be back at the hospital before my next dose of antibiotics. I need to make arrangements for my 18 month old daughter, but asking for childcare with no end date feels like an impossible situation.
Baby was born with my 18 month old and husband in attendance, which I am thankful for. On that day she so sweetly extended her hand to her new and first best friend. As an 18 month old, she will never remember life before him."
