Three Appalachian elders held down the "Old Hills and Old Folks" blockade, locked down to an old crown vic filled with rebar and concrete on an access road to the Mountain Valley Pipeline and halted work on that section of the easement for 15 hours today. There was a strong show of multi-racial support at the Black Lives Matter/LBGTQ march in the little town of Marion, Virginia yesterday. There were also some angry, aggressive white people who seemed to be pretty confused about the meaning of Black Lives Matter and who wanted to show off their confederate and trump2020 flags and yell incoherently. Nonetheless, some good conversations were had, no one got hurt, and the national uprising against racism and police violence continues.

Last week I had an opportunity to spend time making photos with Solutions Oriented Addiction Response: SOAR WV while they distributed masks made by the West Virginia Mask Army, hand sanitizer made by Southern WV Harm Redux, Narcan, and other critical supplies to people who need them. They’re literally out there saving lives and it was a joy to spend a few hours with them. Today their work got a write up in the New York Times that’s worth checking out.

On Saturday over 30 water protectors from communities in Virginia and West Virginia walked on to the MVP worksite at Cove Hollow, VA, just over the hill from the Yellow Finch blockade, blocking pipeline construction while singing and dancing as a community.

Donna Shaunesey, a retired civil servant from Charlottesville who was part of today’s protest, stated: “I am seventy years old. The climate crisis is upon us, and I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t do everything I could to reduce the impacts of this calamity. The Mountain Valley Pipeline will be the equivalent of 26 coal-fired power plants in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. I can’t sit back and hope it goes away.”

A participant from Nelson County stated: “I have no choice but to put my body in the path of this pipeline’s path of destruction, which is fueled by greed and short-sightedness, and completely contradictory to the path we need to be on. Our climate emergency dictates a complete reversal to our status quo. We have no time left to dicker about with half measures and empty promises. Change direction!”

Come out, show your support, and bear witness as MVP and their cronies move closer to the Yellow Finch Blockade and continue to desecrate our lands and mountains.

LGBTQ community and allies held a "bake sale" (free cookies) at the capitol today to "bring some sweetness" to what has been a particularly distasteful legislative session.

WV holding delegate Eric Porterfield accountable for his bigotry and nastiness.

Last month, WV Republican delegate Eric Porterfield publicly called LGBTQ people a “terrorist group” and equated them to the Ku Klux Klan. He later implied that he would drown his own children if he found out they were gay.

Today, West Virginians confronted delegate Porterfield at his capitol office, demanding his resignation. He responded by ordering the capitol police to arrest them for “harassment”. No arrests were made.
