I went to Ijams Nature Center this morning to meet with their education director about a photography presentation they want me to do at their hummingbird festival in August. While there, I wandered around a bit, and spent some time watching this gorgeous indigo bunting zipping back and forth over my head.

This is a male ruby-throated Hummingbird, but the lighting made his chin look black instead. He is NOT a black-chinned hummingbird whose territory is normally west of the Mississippi River, although Knoxville resident, Kristen Smith did have one a couple of years ago that she named Hugo. He stayed in her yard all the way through December! VERY rare!

I've finally started seeing a couple of hummingbirds visiting my feeder and flowers. I managed to catch a couple of images of the male before the week+ of rain and clouds set in. Now, there isn't enough light to get a decent picture.

My bluebird pair appears to have lost all 4 fledglings within two or three days, as they stopped carrying off beaks full of live mealworms and returned to only eating for themselves. The good news is that they are trying again. There are four eggs in the nest this morning, and Papa has been sweetly taking worms to his lady while she does the hard work of producing her eggs.

I looked through the window glass and saw this gorgeous great-crested flycatcher perched on a tree limb. His crest was all poofed up when I saw him, but after I slowly opened the window for a clear shot, he smoothed down his "hair" for the professional photo session! He looked SO colorful in the morning sunshine.

This young robin fledgling is still depending on mom or dad to feed it. When it couldn't get their attention, it scooted down the branch to the only sunny patch of light as if to say "Hey! Look at me! Feed me!"

I was excited to see a Scarlet Tanager at my birdbath this morning. At first, I assumed it was a female, but I saw some red feathers developing on its chest. That makes me think it's a juvenile male, but it seems too early in the season for new fledglings. Things that make you go "Hmmm".
