i’ve heard it over and over… wedding photography isn’t art, it’s commercial work. Here’s why i think that’s a myth…

Yes, we are hired for the job. Yes, it’s how we pay the bills. But no one gets into this career just for the money. It starts as a hobby, a passion project you do with your friends, and you fall in love with creating.

We have the privilege to preserve someone’s history. It is an honor to be chosen for a wedding, every single time.

It’s the boxes of old photos you pull from mom’s garage. It’s remembering how you used to sit on the porch with your grandpa, the one who passed away when you were too young to remember him. It’s seeing your childhood home. It’s asking about your ancestors.

We don’t show up for the paycheck. We show up because we realize how important it is to use our passion for purpose. It’s leaving ego at the door and asking how you can beautifully preserve another’s story.

You might be capturing the last photo of a loved one. It may be the only time your families and friends are in the same room.

So no, i do not believe wedding photography is commercial work. We all want our work to make a difference, right? Sometimes it’s not the big protest, the campaign for our beliefs. Sometimes the biggest difference we can make is with the people in our lives.

We can serve another and ourselves at the same time. Both cups are allowed to be full.

I’m overdue for a reintroduction… i’m Madison! Currently calling Charleston home, constantly seeking new destinations for inspiration.

I’m more at home on a trail than a hotel. I’m a northern girl at heart. My second favorite place in the world is the PNW. And my girls are the ones who have taught me to be the woman i am. my biggest inspirations. the ones who showed me the depths of all love - including platonic.

More than anything, I’m inspired by your stories. Bring your vulnerability and i promise to honor it in a judgement free space. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone, or just another day on this earth, we’re so lucky to be here. To experience life in its many forms. To document change.

I’m the girl who is childless in her 30’s, figuring out life as it happens, pivoting into places i didn’t know were for me, meeting people who have changed my life.

I’d love to meet you! ♥️

This morning I was having my coffee and remembered what day it was. Without brushing my hair or washing my face I grabbed my camera and was out the door.

Photographs outlive us. Future generations have nothing but writings and photographs to learn from. We have to make sure we let them see. Really see…

The narrative being spread is that these protests are violent. I didn’t have anyone to go with to this, and I was perfectly safe. I stood with a pastor, pet lots of dogs, and watched parents with their babies. I talked to the elderly who stood protesting in the 1960’s. I saw nothing but warm embraces and peace.

Maybe that’s what they expect at their rallies…. not here. This morning there was nothing but love for humanity and democracy.

For my photographer friends… there is no way I’d have this life without you. The butterfly effect is so real. If a friend hadn’t spontaneously asked me to go to Utah for a photo retreat, who knows if I’d be traveling. I wouldn’t have met my friend Michelle, who I’d later visit + build an entire portfolio with on the west coast. At one of those sessions I met my best friends in Oregon, who I’ve now stayed with many times. I wouldn’t have met my mentors, who so willingly taught me what they know. They never once made me feel stupid for asking for help. I wouldn’t have seen Mexico or Costa Rica or half the US. Photographers, thank you for opening your hearts and truly welcoming me into the community. You have been too kind to me. I love you SO MUCH ♥️

I will never stop posting from my Oregon archives 💌

WEDNESDAY!!! I am launching a giveaway for photographers! More details drop tomorrow.

I’d be nowhere without my mentors, industry friends, vendor podcasts that keep me company during the week and coffee shop editing dates. I don’t think I’d have the same friends without this job. The greatest thing photography has brought me is all of you.

**hint - a little something to help you through busy season kick off ♥️

Me and Katie were lucky girls and caught Charleston in full bloom twice last week!

Also… I’ve got some news!!!

I’m excited to say I’m officially an ambassador for !

This isn’t a random partnership, by the way. When they reached out to me, their softwares were already on my desktop. I’ve been using Narrative’s blogging software since I first started my website. I think little Maddy would be proud. So it feels like a really fun full circle moment!

Busy season is just kicking off and I might just have some free editing credits to share soon 💌

As the sun disappeared and the city night lights came out to shine, AJ proposed to Evan on a private dock in the middle of downtown Charleston.

It unfolded exactly how it was meant to… I started getting nervous when we lost the light, and now I can’t imagine this moment any other way. The quiet of nightfall, a sparkling skyline, cobblestone streets lit by lanterns.

Proposals are always emotional. Especially when it’s your friend getting engaged… AND I’m currently on my way to meet this girl in Costa Rica to document her retreat!!! Today I’m experiencing one of those moments where I stop to think, “is this really my job?” I feel like the luckiest girl on earth.

A collection of unplanned moments ♥️

These are the images you won’t be able to recreate. The images you can’t pull from Pinterest. The ones you won’t plan for. The ones that don’t feel like a styled shoot. The ones that make you tell a story to your friends. The ones you look at when you’re lonely. The photos you hold close to your chest are the ones that make you remember how love feels
