coats of my grandmother / pt. 3

out of the clustered pile of personal pieces I sourced for this session, was serendipitously drawn to two coats that once belonged to my grandmother. I’ve barely worn them since she passed, but I’m painfully sentimental—so naturally I’ve held onto them for years hoping I’d find a way to wear them.

I haven’t lived in the town I grew up in for nearly twelve years, yet it still finds its way back into my work again and again—whether by intention or by accident.

charleston has been “home” for me the past seven years—long enough to see changes in both the landscape and myself.

when you stay in one place for a while, the things you once found novel can become easily overlooked. I’ve realized part of making art for me—especially as I age—is stopping to really *see* the place I’m standing in. I use the process to understand what it reflects to me and what I can reflect back to it.

without knowing, this was an exercise in allowing old things show me something new about myself and where I can go—in both place, self, and art.

coats of my grandmother / pt. 2

was visiting town for a few days and living out of a suitcase, so I gathered every statement piece I had lying in my closet with the hopes something would work.

admittedly, I was nervous my clothes were gonna be lame. I even forgot a few things and phoned a few friends. (shoutout to for the rainboots and .housewares for the extra inventory just in case!)

photographing commercially can often dominate my creative energy. I’ve turned into a methodical planner over the years—having every detail, from wardrobe to locations and shot list, heavily planned and curated days/weeks ahead.

though the unscripted nature of making these photos with Glennon went completely against my newfound nature, the process felt like a much needed return to making art for arts sake.

there’s beauty in having no expectations and just meeting to see what happens.

maybe I’m just a sap, maybe I’ve just missed this space, but it felt rejuvenating to trust the flow of our instincts to deliver.

excited to have challenged myself with mixing both film and digital into this one. ♥️

coats of my grandmother / pt. 1

this test shoot with felt like the gust of a hard exhale after such a hard year. it was cold and rainy the days leading up, yet we were met with golden sunlight and warmth. we flowed in harmony, we embodied spontaneity, and we filled the air with constant fits of laughter and honest conversation. it was one of those sessions where everything clicked immediately and naturally—like the moment had been there all along just waiting for us to arrive.

excited to have mixed both film and digital into this one.

more to come from this sesh that felt like coming home—for Glennon and I both ♥️
