This likely won’t be a new series, but it was worth noting how many different styles of house numbers I noticed on a single day out photographing downtown. Again, not surprising they exist, but surprising how many there are when you finally start to keep an eye out.

What I do know is that this will be the final July series.

Next up, August…

We blinked once and July passed us by. We blinked again and now Labor Day is staring us down from next weekend, whether we are ready or not.

I can’t be the only one who feels like we just celebrated America’s 250th anniversary with the grandest fireworks displays this country has ever seen.

I can’t also be the only one who is not willing to let September pry the brilliant rays of summer nostalgia from my proverbial hands.

The fireworks are over.

The beaches and lakes are abandoned.

The fireflies are gone.

Soon, the hummingbirds will be gone.

Then the flowers fade.

No one will be able to catch a sunset after 6:00pm.

We’ll be more focused on frost forecasts than UV forecasts.

If all that sounds like a step in the wrong direction, then step back with me for a minute to the sunshine and beauty of July.

I’d like to make myself believe…that summer wasn’t ending.

You all had a lot to say on this topic in the previous post. I can’t say that I am terribly surprised.

While I thought I covered all the bases with my caveats in that carousel post, one thing I did not fully account for was the number of claims that [name of city] was hotter. Claims that I knew were inaccurate (because I had already checked the numbers) but that I didn’t provide the data to clearly illustrate.

Enter: this post

Based on a combination of the cities some of you suggested were hotter, and those cities I have checked that are typically on the “hot list”, the following is a ranking of *select* cities across the U.S. and how they stack up when it comes to the “Hottest U.S. Cities”.

Did I miss any?

Introducing our newest series, The Colorful Houses of Charleston.

Everyone knows about Rainbow Row. You may have even heard of the famous “Pink House” here, or the plethora of pink houses sprinkled all over downtown (and beyond).

But the sheer number of houses of all different hues and colors would probably surprise most. I’ve walked these streets hundreds of times and even I was surprised by how many colorful houses I see, now that I have been more intentional to notice.

There’s more than enough of these houses to start their own monthly series. Really, each color could have its own series. But I think the combined palette of colors is what really provides the visual intrigue. After all, it’s what Rainbow Row is all about.

(Shocker: Rainbow Row is not featured in this month’s series.)
(Spoiler: it will be in the upcoming August series, however.)

It’s been awhile since I’ve done a staircases series. There were enough that caught my eye last month that I felt it was time to bring them back. I’m seeing them more often in my downtown strolls, so I’d guess this series may be making a comeback in the coming months.
