During the rapid economic growth of 60s and 70s in Japan, many enormous government housing complexes, known as danchi, were built to accommodate growing population and work force surrounding Tokyo and other major cities. Now, many of these danchi have become ghost towns as population aged and younger generations preferred living in newer developments.
There is one such danchi over on the other side of the hill and like others, it has seen better days and has faded significantly - a supermarket, like the anchor store of a mall and one of the main foal points of the community, shut its doors a few years ago.
Yet there are signs of life and rejuvenation - I’ve noticed an increase in the number of younger families during this visit, and now there is a pizza and craft beer place that has opened last summer. I feel something warm inside seeing its rebirth, the place that was once filled with jubilant shouts and cries of children - mine among them.
