‘Just Because She Carries It Well Doesn't Mean It Isn't Heavy’

I have been sitting here trying to find the words to pair with this image.... writing them out.... rewriting them. Deleting whole pages and starting over. All that remains is the lump in my throat.

This image was inspired by my life as a woman and a young single mother. I do not want to break down every detail for you. You can find the story, whatever it means to you.

I wrote Ward Churchill to ask if I could use the spine of his book, Agents of Repression, in the image to help tell the story. He agreed, and only asked that I send him a digital copy when it was complete. I did, and this was his response:

Love and rage, love and rage, love and rage..... Those words brought tears to my eyes and sent chills down my spine.... Like poetry for my soul. I thought to myself, he gets it. That was all I needed in that moment. A quiet nod of understanding.

Between kicking his sister and making her smell his foot, and wanting to run around, I managed to capture the momentary cuteness of three year old mischief. While the stress of trying to get just one good picture is still fresh in my mind, the memory I get to hold onto is the one that makes me smile. The adorable but surely up-to-something grin that fully capture's my son's personality. I absolutely love the real moments. I won't look back at this in 10 years and remember the struggle, I'll remember his personality at this age and it will bring me a smile.

I think the number one thing I hear from my clients is how much fun they have during their sessions. I always come prepared with posing ideas, but there is nothing worse than a picture that doesn't feel natural to you. I like to work with your family's strengths and personalities and capture authentic moments that make you go, "oh my goodness! That's exactly us!" This mom gets to take this magically ordinary moment and hold onto it for a lifetime. Don't worry about hating pictures, grumpy kids, grumpy partners, not being perfect. Life will never ever be perfect, but there are so many beautiful moments to capture anyway.

Every year I anxiously await the first snow, because the joy on kids' faces during it is priceless. However this year I thought I had missed it because my daughter's been busy with school and my son is more of an inside dude most days. I realized today though, as I watched him, that first snow joy doesn't have to always be outside. This kiddo is my people watcher, my observer, he is so incredibly smart and sees the world in the most beautiful ways. As I watched him watch the trucks and people and all that beautiful snow, I realized that even though it was a little different than my usual first snow pictures... I still captured that joy and magic that the day brings.

I'm obsessed with all the mom/kid interactions I've been capturing over the last month. As a mom myself, I know how rare it is to get to be in the pictures. I love this moment. The attentive listening to possibly the 100th story that your child has told you that day. It's beautiful. It's sometimes exhausting and you wonder if it's making a difference, and then you see a picture like this and know that your smile, your eye contact, your touch means everything to your kiddo. When I get quiet during a session, it's not because I've stopped taking pictures, it's because I'm busy capturing the incredible realness in front of my camera.

I love these kiddos. Over the summer I enrolled my daughter in soccer, hoping to spark her love for a game that I devoted my life to. Unfortunately, she enjoyed spending time laying on the field looking at the clouds instead lol. However, soccer brought this amazing family into our lives and these two became besties. Running up and down the field holding hands, and play dates between games, I had to get them out for a little photo session because (although I'm biased) nothing is cuter than those first childhood friendships

There is honestly nothing better than capturing the laughter and love of families. I have truly been sitting here for 15 minutes trying to find something amazing to say, but it just comes down to that. Life moves so incredibly fast, and we all luckily have cell phones to capture as much as we can as quickly as we can but that usually leaves at least one person not included in the moment. I love that for this brief moment in time, everyone gets to enjoy the fun and I get to sit back and capture it all for them to hold onto. Memories are truly priceless and I'm so honored to be entrusted with these moments.

Uh oh! Selfie alert!

So I've been away from social media for about a month due to a family emergency, but what I have been doing is making a point to find the local gems in my community and get to know and partake in local businesses. So I've set a goal to highlight a local business that I think is doing a phenomenal job and tell you a little about my experience!

Recently, I was in need of a big change for my hair and needed someone I could trust with the task of pretty much cutting it all off. From a full time messy bun, to pixie freedom I could not be happier with the experience I received at Sweet Salon and Barber Shoppe in Chanhassen, MN! I saw Jaslynn but had the opportunity to briefly chat with both ladies who work there and seriously, the nicest!

If you're a busy mom like me who wants a new look, or to update an old one I highly recommend Sweet Salon! They will talk through your vision, pamper you like a queen and provide some great conversation! My picture is just a selfie, but I am absolutely in love with my no fuss hair style and can't wait to book my next appointment! I'm even thinking of adding some fun colors which they totally rock at!

So on my first installment of local hype, I'm recommending the truly amazing Sweet Salon & Barber Shoppe. I usually DREAD haircuts and instead I'm already excited for the next! Up next I'll be sharing my favorite local coffee place! So stay tuned! ❤️

Happy birthday to my oldest! The one who made me a mom and everyday reminds what life is all about. The kindest, strongest, most adventurous soul who shares her light selflessly with the world. Everyday I feel honored to have her call me mom 🥰. Happy birthday, love! May you continue to be my wild child 🥰
