Most graduating seniors do one photo session. Usually in March, in a hurry, about three weeks after the school finally hands out the gowns and about ten days before the announcements have to be ordered.
I'm doing it differently this year. The change came from paying attention to how grads and parents were feeling, how stressed they were, and which photos clients liked.
The cap and gown portrait is the one that goes in the announcement. It's a photograph of an awesome achievement, and every senior should have one. They are genuinely worth making.
The image still hanging in the house years later, though, is almost never the cap and gown. It's the one made in the fall, when they're relaxed and not pressured by deadlines. They're in their own clothes, next to the truck they love or holding the instrument they've carried since fifth grade, looking like themselves rather than like a graduate. Those are the photos that go on the walls and in the albums, as well as on the grad announcement!
So I've built my offerings around two sessions. One in the fall that captures who they are, and one in the spring to celebrate what they've accomplished.
