Nothing on this site is going to waste.
What you're watching is the concrete from the previous structure getting a second life. Instead of hauling it off and trucking in new material, that old concrete is being fed straight into the crusher and turned back into usable aggregate right here on the jobsite.
That crushed material becomes the subbase, the compacted layer that sits beneath the new foundation and spreads the load so everything built on top stays level and stable for the long haul. On this Koelker Excavating project, that foundation belongs to a new TravelCenters of America.
Crushing and reusing concrete on-site cuts down on hauling, keeps good material out of the landfill, and gives the new build a solid base to stand on. Same ground, new purpose.
