Cuando llegué al Darién en 2002, no sabía que mi cámara iba a cambiarme para siempre.

Había sido contratado por una ONG europea para documentar las condiciones de vida de los niños indígenas. No era un trabajo glamoroso. No había luces, no había estudio, no había nada más que selva, lluvia, y una dignidad que dolía.

Esta foto la tomé en una comunidad emberá. No sé su nombre. Solo recuerdo su mirada. Ese niño, desnudo en la tierra, miraba hacia la luz como si ya supiera que la vida le iba a costar más que a otros.

No tenía juguetes. Ni zapatos. Ni techo digno. Pero tenía algo que muchos hemos perdido: asombro. Silencio. Esperanza.

No hubo aplausos. No hubo likes. Solo el clic de una Nikon F4 cargada con un rollo de T-Max 400 y mis manos temblando al saber que acababa de atrapar un instante eterno.

Hoy, más de 20 años después, sigo creyendo que la fotografía no es para decorar paredes, sino para sacudir conciencias. Esta imagen no necesita filtros ni promesas vacías. Solo pide que la mires. Y que no olvides.

Wala, Darien — A Glimpse Beyond the Fence

Over 20 years ago, I walked into Wala, a Wounaan village in Panama’s Darién jungle, carrying only my cameras and a quiet sense of awe.

I shot with Kodak Gold 200 and T-MAX 400, capturing life as it was — unposed, unfiltered, unforgettable.

These kids didn’t ask for anything. They just looked. And that look still speaks louder than words.

This is part of a series I never published. Until now.

Flash straight to the face. One softbox, no scrim, no modifiers, no direction. Harsh catchlights, flat skin, zero storytelling. It’s fast and convenient — but often too raw, too literal.
