Comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) this morning at 4:34am. So cool this comet 💫 was discovered on March 27, 2020! This comet has two tails, one made of dust and the other made of gas. The night sky is so fascinating. I couldn’t resist getting out of bed a 3:30am to experience this.

Standing outside for hours in remote places on dark moonless nights is one reason I love Milky Way photography. It is very peaceful, sometimes cold, and there are always critter noises. Nighttime is a very vibrant time of day. My bat 🦇 biologist friend says there are as many bats flying around at night as there are birds in the day. I think the bats may have the birds outnumbered in this location though.

A bristlecone pine forest practically in my back yard and I didn’t even know it. Some lesser known facts about these trees: they thrive in poor soil conditions and won’t grow in good soil. Some trees in this particular stand were around before the Roman Empire. They tend to grow in new open ground. A well known fact is that they are the oldest non-cloning organisms on earth with the oldest living one at 5,000 years old, but some dead but still standing bristlecones were 9,000 years old before they died.

On a beautiful moonless night in August near Kings Peak. Kings Peak is in the shot, but it doesn’t look like the tallest peak from this perspective. We camped near Dollar lake and summited Kings Peak the morning after this shot.

Apparently it is World Photography Day, something to do with the French government purchasing the patent to the daguerreotype and making it free to the world. Thanks for kicking things off French government. I also should thank my dad for passing on his love for photography to me. These shots are from a trip to High Spur Canyon in 2017. First shot is me in a pothole, second shot is my dad.

It’s a six mile round trip mountain bike ride in the dark to get to this location. I’ve passed it by in the daytime many times and I’ve always wanted to shoot it with the Milky Way. Made it happen last week. I prefer the composition in the daytime shot here, but that would require a completely different MW alignment. If trees could tell stories, I bet this one would have some interesting one to share.

Happy Earth Day 🌏. The thing I love about photography is that it makes you appreciate the beauty that surrounds us, especially when you are the one out there experiencing the moment that will become frozen in the photograph. Reminds me of this quote from a book I just finished: “Contemplating the impermanence of everything in the world we are forced to recognize that every time we do something it might be the last time we do it and this recognition can invest the things we do with a significance and intensity that would otherwise be absent.”
