Strauss Mansion Museum
Location : 27 Prospect Cir, Atlantic Highlands, NJ 07716
This historic building built in 1893 by wealthy New York merchant Adolph Strauss, the Strauss Mansion is a 21-room Victorian era Queen Anne-style “cottage” erected on the Atlantic Highlands hillside. Stunning views of New York City, the harbor, and Sandy Hook, can be seen from the third floor Tower Room.
Exhibits include Victorian-era period displays, a room dedicated to the history of the Lenni Lenape, collections of local history items, and a vast newspaper archives and library.
Currently closed for repairs form severe damage caused by storms last winter.
The house was sold in the 1960s, divided into apartments and ultimately condemned in 1981 for code violations. The Atlantic Highlands Historical Society bought the house in 1981, made repairs and opened the first floor to the public in 1986 as a house museum.
Once known as "The Towers" for its two towers, a circular tower four stories high on the north and west corner at Mount and Eighth as well as a a hexagonal tower three stories high on the south west corner on Eighth Avenue.
The house also features wrap around porches on two stories along with natural scalloped and diamond cut shingles a roofline with multiple peaks, dormers, gambrel, and hips.
The property was listed on New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places in 2012
