Photographers and photography aficionados:

Through Each Others Eyes, a Phoenix-based international photographer exchange organization, is sponsoring a seminar featuring three prominent Arizona photographers. Scott Baxter, Joel Grimes, and Jeff Kida (Arizona Highways magazine photography editor) will each present their unique styles and photographic philosophies. I’m excited to attend. One more from the Dolomites before I call it a day. This image was made at Lago di Braies, a wildly beautiful and extremely popular spot. We arrived early to beat the crowds and find parking, as this location draws thousands of tourists daily. Most of the photos I’ve seen from this place focus on reflections of the surrounding mountains and the boats that visitors rent. But this smaller scene was more my style.

I recently returned from a family trip to northern Italy, which included several days in the Dolomites. Such a spectacularly beautiful place! As this was largely a driving trip with very little hiking or time specifically set aside for photography, most of the images I made were “roadkill,” shot from the side of the road… when there actually was a place to stop, which was rare. I can’t wait to go back and really explore the finer details of these stunning mountains.

Something a bit different— crinoid fossils in the Kaibab limestone along the Grand Canyon rim, just above Nautiloid Canyon. These are about 270 million years old, from the Permian period, a time when this region was a shallow, warm tropical sea. Oh, how times have changed!

For those interested in technical details, this was a 45 frame focus stack shot with a 100 mm macro lens on a Canon R5.

A few more images of the Grand Canyon and the mighty river that carved it, made at the East Rim on the Navajo Nation.

As I’ve written about before, the Colorado’s water rights were established by a 1922 compact between seven western states at a time when few people lived in the region. Fast forward a hundred years and now over 40 million rely on the river’s flow. Unfortunately, the compact established water delivery benchmarks during a particularly wet period, significantly overestimating the flow. Actual levels have been much lower, a situation now exacerbated by two decades of severe drought. Water storage in the West’s two major reservoirs— Lake Powell and Lake Mead— is at a record low, and there’s little reason to expect improvement any time soon. The existing Colorado River Compact expires at the end of this year and, so far, the member states have failed to renegotiate an acceptable compromise. That’s forced the federal government to step in, and I suspect that the mandate they impose will be unpalatable to all. Numerous fights and lawsuits are anticipated.

Ultimately, though, we who live here and rely on this dreadfully overused river need to face reality and adapt to life with diminishing water. There’s only so far the water bottle can be kicked down the road.

I spent a couple of days this past weekend on the East Rim of the Grand Canyon, hoping to photograph monsoon storms. Unfortunately, the desired meteorological magic didn’t happen. As Mick Jagger once said, “You can’t always get what you want.” But a couple of days enjoyed at the edge of the canyon are better than those spent nearly anywhere else. Sometimes you do, indeed, get what you need.

Many thanks to my friends Reuben and Cassie at Jhani's LLC for arranging this visit to such a special place. The East Rim is Navajo land and can only be accessed with a local native guide. There’s nothing quite like sitting at the edge of the great abyss in total silence, free of the crowds found in the national park.
