There are lots of little tricks to make a landscape photograph more interesting. For example: you can use a telephoto lens to compress space and bring various subjects closer together. You can shoot at a tight aperture to creat a starburst effect. You can foreground an object to give your image more depth. All of these are techniques I love using when taking photos. But at the end of the day, there's just nothing better than when the universe puts on a show and you happen to be in the right place at the right time! Last night's sunset at Seacliff State Beach was full on mind blowing and I'm so glad I got to see it 😄

Our campsite had both excellent views of the Cascades and round the clock entertainment from the many mountain goats inhabiting the area. Interestingly, due to the lack of salt and other essential minerals in this alpine environment, these goats were particulary keen to.....wait for it.....lick human urine! So yeah, word to the wise: make sure you p*e well away from camp or you might just have goats feasting around your tent all night...

In typical fashion, the night of this sunset I was sprinting down the trail trying to find an ideal vantage point before the light and colors faded out. When I eventually found a perch overlooking the lake I was heaving for air and it took me a while to stop coughing. But all the frantic running up the trail with fingers crossed was well worth the next fifteen minutes of striking beauty as the clouds illuminated over Lake Sabrina.

Last evening I was in a similar circumstance, sprinting through the woods towards the clearing in Castle Rock State Park. In the end I missed captruing an exceptionally dramatic landscape by a matter of a minute or two as I fumbled to get out my equipement and the sun went behind the clouds and fog; it was such a bummer to miss it by such a narrow margin. So here's to recalling a time where the last minute sprint actually paid off! Atleast from a photographic standpoint...

Aerial perspectives around Conway Summit three weeks ago 🍂 The Eastern Sierra is such a magical place and I was stoked for my first opportunity to see the region blanketed in peak fall colors. Also great to meet some new friends also out on the trails .g.photo

Last Sunday we were treated to a heart warming display of humpback whale behavior on the Monterey Bay. We observed mother, Ratchet and her calf Ricochet continually breaching, and pec and tail slapping for about half an hour. For me, what was so cool about this experience was that I'd never so evidently seen wildlife teaching its offspring as Richochet emulated their mother's surface behaviors. Exhilarating sight to see! Picture in this breach is Ratchet.
