Let’s talk about toddlers. Before I became a photographer and a mom, I was a nanny so I have been working with toddlers forever! I think I’ve always been drawn to them, like I speak their language. They’re hilarious, dramatic, insightful, curious, wild but mostly just misunderstood. They are unapologetically authentic and I love that. You can’t force them to be anyone but themselves. And sometimes that doesn’t mix with photoshoots where parents want happy smiles. Here is where expectations come into play. Parents of kids under 4… no tears is a great shoot. Period. And even with some tears, we can still turn it around. A smile would be incredible but that’s never my expectation. I just want them to feel comfortable, whatever that means. Cuddles from mom, running around exploring, hunting for shells… I don’t expect them to look at me and smile. So parents, drop the stress. There’s no pressure for your kids to perform with me. Yes, I’ll do my best to warm them up, sing songs and be goofy but I read the room. Sometimes that means I give space and let them be. All that to say, your and your toddlers are safe with me. Regardless of their moods that day. You’ll miss their little faces one day, even the grumpy ones. And one day they’ll be big, they’ll sit and smile on cue. Best thing to do is relax, try to enjoy the day and give them lots of love. I’ll do the rest!✨
