Sadly, we found two barn owls dead in one of the Twin Barns. Our biologist and his assistant put on protective gear and carefully collected them to send to a lab for testing. The results: the owls died of avian influenza; but the collectors are safe and well, thanks to their precautions. If you find a dead bird, don't touch! If it's at the refuge, call us. Off-refuge, report to WDFW: https://www.northcascadesaudubon.org/reporting-avian-flu

We have a position available, funded by the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife and offered through the American Conservation Experience. The main focus is on bullfrog removal in the Black River Unit. But work includes a variety of projects, including green crab monitoring, testing snakes for fungal infection, shorebird surveys, and more. It's a great introduction to the work of a biologist! September has come and gone. Winter is here and the wild places are quite a lot calmer. Nature is settling in for winter’s quiet struggle. A few months from now all will awaken and the woods will rumble again.

The grey winter days of western Washington are here, so I went back through some images from Spring when I found this Violet Green Swallow at a local state park (Flaming Geyser).
