Horned Larks!

Wait! Those are not dark-eyed juncos. They are something else. Holy cow! A flock of horned larks made a visit to the field directly in front of the Cape May Point Lighthouse. The individual horned lark is heavily cropped. Horned larks do in fact have tiny horns, hence their name.

Snow Geese on a Snowy Day!

Going from the Visitor Center to the Museum at Cape May Point State Park can yield fantastic results. It was exciting to hear and see 123 snow geese flying over the park today. Instead of counting each snow goose, I should have just used the 3rd through 5th terms of the Fibonacci sequence in nature.

A Horse, of Course!

On Thursday, the park was visited by many mounted police officers from several states including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Virginia. The police officers rode the horses from Sunset Beach all the way around to our beach (Cape May Point State Park). The white horses' name is Misty. A couple of horses, including Misty could not resist the urge to roll around in the sand. What a neat sight!

Great Places to Visit in New Jersey:
Doris Duke Farms
Duke Farms in Hillsborough Township, NJ, has been on my bucket list for years. It is a 2,700-acre property that was owned by the late actress, Doris Day. There are hundreds of acres of fields that have native wildflowers. The dominant plants in bloom now are golden rod and New England aster. It was cool to photograph the common milkweed seeds that were blanketing the golden rod. The amazing bird for the site was an American kestrel that live in lucky box # 13. In addition, I was amazed at how many hundreds of grasshoppers/locusts I came across on the trail. A video does not do it justice. It truly was magical. When I arrived back at my car, I saw something fly in a tree. It was a large moth that camouflaged so well with the tree bark.

Great Places to Visit in New Jersey:
Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge
Earlier this week, I had the privilege of visiting Great Swamp NWR in Basking Ridge, NJ. Out in the distance, there was a vibrant yellow mass that caught my eye. I slowly went to investigate and was happy to discover that the yellow was our native sunflower. How exciting! Afterwards, I walked the White Oak Trail. It was interesting to see the plant and fungi diversity. It was fascinating to see several minute flies probing on top of the mushroom. Finally, in the late afternoon, I saw three serous photographers observing something in the woods. I was elated to see that they were photographing a barred owl. While watching it, the local photographer told me that the right eye is smaller because it was attacked while in the nest, which was the result of possibly a Cooper's hawk.
