Here is a bit of the History of the barn.

Wickfield Pavilion - Cantril, IA

National Historic Register - 1986

Perhaps no barn in Iowa has as colorful a history as Cantril's famed round barn. At one time or another it was a sales pavilion, a packing plant, dormitory and, believe it or not, was raided as a "speakeasy" during prohibition days.

Built in 1918 on the Wickfield farm at a cost of $20,000, it became known as the largest Hampshire hog farm in the world with some 1500 hogs being fed at once.

The barn had 8 dormers on the lower part of the roof and 4 on the second part. The basement complex was beautifully equipped for humans with a dining room and kitchen . . also a furnace room, an electric lighting plant, and a fruit cellar. The ground floor was a sales pavilion and the loft contained eight dormitory rooms for workers and for overnight guests. The crow's nest was a card room and social parlor.

Fifty two feet in diameter, the structure is 65 feet tall.

Wickfield Farms usually held two auctions each year, some lasting up to three months. Steep bidding was part of the spectacle. One animal sold for a whopping $5,000. Many hogs were displayed at shows in the Midwest, and in 1923 their record included 6 grand champions, 12 champions and 59 firsts. Cash winnings topped $2,300. Two famous hogs were Lookout Lad and Lieutenant Wickware.

The final curtain fell in the mid 20's when the farm economy turned sour, the farm finally sold to individuals outside the family. The barn was then used for recreation, later storage.

I have a soft spot for this ole round barn... as the man who built the Wickfield Pavillion is also the man who designed and build the home that I own in Cantril. So I feel a very strong connection to the history of round barn and my home.

Eye of the sky...While the Bald Eagle appears to be such a majestic bird and is proudly displayed as the United States of American's bird, especially when it is soaring through the sky or is perched in a tree, in all reality it is a bird of prey that is found North America. It will be seen diving to kill something, trying to catch fish or eating dead things along the road, like a Vulture does.

The Vernon School, located in Vernon, within the Villages of Van Buren County Iowa.

In 1837 Vernon was 1st known as South Bentonsport.

In 1852 Vernon received its current name when the post office was established.

In May of 1866 the Vernon citizens started the process to create a public school.

In January of 1867 they acquired the land. From there the construction went rather slowly, as the Vernon School funds became available.

In1873 the school board was still hiring workers to do finishing work, even though it was partially completed.

The Vernon School held its last classes in 1960.

The "Haunted" Mason House Inn, Bentonsport, in the Villages of Van Buren County Iowa, was built in 1846.

The Mason House Inn was a noted place for the countless steamboat travelers that stopped in Bentonsport to rest before further travel or prepare to settle in the area.

Over the next 176 years of The Mason Inn existence there has been talk of multiple hauntings. With historical facts that 3 of the hotel's owners have died in it, it shouldn't surprise us to have some restless, lost spirits still linger within the Mason House Inn walls. Guests have experienced so many paranormal activities over the years. So much so that it has intrigued paranormal investigators to the Mason House Inn, even Psychics.

5 ghosts linger about that the owners and guests are aware of.

Mr Knapp was murdered in room 7, it is believed he is the friendly spirit that haunts that room.

There is also another friendly spirit of the little boy who likes to tug at guests' clothing in Room 5.

If you were to be brave enough to check into room 8 you would most likely see a floating head.

There is also an old lady dressed in a white nightgown who likes to visit multiple room throughout the inn.

Guests have seen a strange white fog, and experienced feeling of their room temperatures dropping.

With Halloween up and coming I thought you all might enjoy a real haunted place, within the Villages...if you're brave enough to go, that is! Or, perhaps just a good creepy story to read about instead...
