Book review from Medium (2025):

The Rainfall Market by You Yeong-Gwang is a whimsical and emotionally rich novel that blends Korean folklore with contemporary themes of self-discovery and healing. Originally written in Korean and translated into English by Slin Jung, the story follows Serin, a high school student weighed down by personal tragedies—her father’s death, her sister’s disappearance, and the struggles of poverty. After sending a heartfelt letter about her misfortunes, she receives a mysterious ticket to the Rainfall Market, a magical place that appears only during the rainy season. There, accompanied by Issha, a shape-shifting cat-spirit, Serin explores enchanted shops run by Dokkaebi (mythical Korean goblins), each offering glimpses into lives she could live. But she must choose a new life within a week—or risk being trapped in the market forever.

We’re so excited to welcome Mai Hinton back to the studio for a Japanese Calligraphy (Shodo) workshop on Sunday, May 3 (1-3pm). Mai joined us as an instructor for our Galentine’s Event. Her class was very well attended, and people wanted more!

Mai is the owner of Wabi Sabi by Mai and a Japanese Calligraphy (Shodo) artist. She’s originally from Japan, and began studying Shodo when she was 6.

In this workshop, attendees will learn the basics of shodo, and receive guided instruction as they practice. All materials will be provided. Attendees will make a Kakejiku (hanging scroll) with seasonal words of their choices, perfect for home decor or to give as a gift.

This workshop is for all skill levels and we recommend ages 12+, or be capable of working independently.

Chalk handlettering with will feature a spring-inspired chalk board that you’ll get to take home with you! Shannon is a friend of the studio and has shared her talent through two workshops here so far.

Community Yoga is a donation-based class taught by Each month, we’re choosing a different local organization or non-profit to support. For our inaugural event on April 15, we’re supporting since we love being in a shared building!

Japanese Calligraphy with is back by popular request! This time, Mai will be teaching a full-length workshop where we’ll explore the history and we’ll practice techniques for traditional Kakejiku.
