The Loretto Chapel was built in the late 1800s by the Sisters of Loretto in Santa Fe, New Mexico. When construction was completed, the chapel’s choir loft had no way to access it. According to tradition, the sisters prayed a novena for help. Soon after, a mysterious carpenter appeared and built the now-famous spiral staircase.
The staircase makes two full turns, has no central support column, and was constructed using only wooden pegs—no nails. When the work was finished, the carpenter disappeared without payment, leading many to believe he was St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters.
Today, the chapel is one of Santa Fe’s most visited landmarks, known for both its architectural ingenuity and enduring mystery.
