A few more from my day in the sunshine with Allya Yourish

Truly nothing more special than maintaining a friendship from childhood, across oceans, and throughout so many life changes. If you would have told Allya and I who we’d be 20+ years later, I think our younger selves would be so proud.

Not every q***r story is about survival.

LGBTQ people deserve to be seen falling in love, celebrating milestones, building families, laughing with friends, growing old together, and simply living their lives.

For generations, LGBTQ+ people were excluded from history books, forced to hide relationships, and denied the opportunity to openly document their lives. That’s part of why representation matters. Not just because it helps people feel seen today, but because it becomes part of the story we leave behind.

Research shows that positive LGBTQ+ representation can increase feelings of acceptance, belonging, and possibility. For people who rarely saw themselves reflected growing up, q***r joy can be more than uplifting. It can be a glimpse of a future they weren’t sure existed.

Somewhere, someone needs to see q***r people thriving.

When my wife and I were looking for our own wedding photographer, one of the first things we would ask a vendor we were interested in was “do you accept q***r couples.”

Pressing send and hoping for a positive response was always unnerving and, honestly, scary.

We were lucky enough to be met with such love and acceptance from all our wedding vendors, but this is NOT true for everyone.

For us, it was the vendors that made it abundantly clear that they, not only accepted, but celebrated LGBTQ+ people that made wedding planning so much easier.

To photographers and event vendors: the little things matter. The language on your website. The examples in your portfolio. The assumptions you make when posing people. The forms you send before a session. They all add up.

Every client deserves to know they can show up fully as themselves and be celebrated exactly as they are.

And honestly? That’s the kind of photography I want to create anyway. Real people. Real relationships. Real stories.

I’ve known Allya since we met at Girl Scout Camp under the camp names Daffodil (Daffy) and Super Freak (me).

Allya was a HUGE part of my early photography days, hosting sleepovers where we’d “model” for each other in the backyard or living room and then proceed to Photoshop the sh*t out of the photos.

I don’t know if she knows this, but she once posted something (forever ago) along the lines of, “Straight girls don’t think about kissing other girls,” and that may have been one of the first times I realized I might not be straight.

Well, here we are now, both married to our beautiful wives and still taking photographs (with MUCH less editing this time).

Still obsessing over these. I’ve said it before, but you never know what kind of day you’ll get on the Oregon coast, and yet it seems to always work out. Truthfully, though, rain or shine together we can make magic happen for your session.

A little BTS from the styled shoot hosted by last month.

I’m definitely trying to get better about recording little videos while I shoot because I honestly love seeing the real moments just as much as the final photos.
