My Story
I don’t know which came first, love of horses or photography. Both seem like they have been a part of me since I spit out those first words – by myself! Of course “horse” followed and I’ve been off and running ever since. Whether it was riding hell-bent ba****ck across the countryside, or working to get the perfect shot, staying behind the lenses has provided the start of many adventures over the years. Equine images old and new set the groundwork of my collection, starting with my hero: Secretariat, the greatest horse to ever live, hands down. It would take books to show off my favorite photos and tell the stories of a big red horse. My many visits to Claiborne Farm were my bucket trips before I even knew what it was.
From the very beginning, if I can see their image, it has been mine to capture. Big Red, Spectacular Bid, Cigar, Curlin, Zenyatta, American Pharoah and Justify are just a few of my “greats” from racing. Fearless jockeys balancing on live fireballs with trainers trying to direct the ride, grooms holding it all together in the background, and every part of the track there for a moment captured in time. Early dawn breaking through mist, with lights playing against living breathe as they prepare for coming battle. Glued to the rail, eye pressed against the lenses, I can hear the cadence of hoof beats as they approach the turn, and the sound syncs with my own heartbeat. Down the stretch they come to me and I am at home.
It’s not just competition in a circle, any place in Kentucky where the ribbon is the prize draws me like a moth to the flame. The small county fair on hot summer evenings to the world where legends compete, I am there. Getting to photograph the pony lead class is just as important as HRH Prince Phillip, Princess Ann, William Shatner, or the King and Princess of Saudi Arabia, who all have graced my lenses. The last day of the state fair will always find me in awe of the draft horse pulls. Spending the afternoon in this arena is a moment frozen in time. These gentle giants wake up the thunder as they approach the sleds for their own battle.
To complete the story I have to go to the farm. There has been a giant black stallion who stole my heart, as well as whiskery foals and dancing horses. Sunsets and horse play provides the spiritual release to the soul. Mares and foals, foals and foals, stallions, and burros. And I can’t forget the consent presences of my four-legged friends, our dogs, mostly rescue, all family.
