The photo is terrible quality because I took it with my phone at dusk, but this is the one caterpillar that remains. He is smaller then the other three, just about 2 inches right now. He should triple in size over the coming days. I am sure the others are down in the tangle of native plants starting to form a chrysalis. They will hang in a "J" for 12 to 24 hours before forming a chrysalis. I will look more closely tomorrow and see if I can find them. They travel 10 to 30 feet from their milkweed when forming the chrysalis to avoid predators. I really hope they are close by.

Day two of caterpillar watch. I went out today and I only saw one caterpillar. My hope is the other two have started turning into chrysalis somewhere that I can't see them, but I fear that they were lunch for a bird. So I made a cage over the milkweed using chicken wire, I hope its enough to deter birds. While I was doing this I found a second small caterpillar. It is more than half the size of the larger one. Tune in tomorrow for the next episode of as the Monarch World Turns.

Look who I found today in my native wildflowers that I planted last summer! I only have one milkweed plant in the mix and these guys found it. I am so excited! For those of you that don't know, these guys will form a chrysalis and turn into monarch butterflies. As big as they are I think they are close to going into a chrysalis, they go through 5 instars before changing. They will be part of the super generation because they will live 8 or 9 months in order to migrate to Mexico. Normal summer monarchs only live 2 to 3 weeks. Stay tuned to see progress pictures.

One day very soon I am going to look out my window and the hummers will be gone. But for now they are gobbling up all the food they can to get ready for their journey south. I really wish they didn't have to go....

This is the second year that I have had a cardinal family raising babies in my back yard. They look like they are getting old enough to eat for themselves, but what do I know? LOL.

Five miles and two hours later and this was all she wrote. I just have not had much luck lately finding birds. The barn owl was a lifer for me, so that made it all worth it. If you are interested in seeing the barn owl at Pickerington Ponds there is a parking lot within 1/4 mile of the viewing area. I would suggest you go near sunset. I plan to go back soon to see if we can see it come out, as we were there at 3 in the afternoon.

I've went out two days in a row birding and turned up almost nothing. I went to Scioto Trails yesterday and saw only Canada Geese and heard a Pee-wee and Goldfinch. Today I went to Seip Earthworks and saw only two Cedar Waxwings, a vulture, and three doves. I have never went there before and not seen red winged black birds or meadowlarks. I ran into another birder and she hypothesized that the birds are molting early so they are laying low. I did see lots of beautiful butterflies there.

I have taken a lot of pictures of Great Blue Herons, but this is my favorite so far. This was at Deer Creek and he was just taking off from the shore.

Herron Downs Fen is a 174 acre nature preserve on 159 just north of Chillicothe. Its just down the road from Kinnikinic Fen. As you walk down the trail you first walk along the solar field. The fence and solar panels are a great place to bird watch. I saw about 8 Eastern King birds, field and song sparrows, pee-wees, and phoebes using the fence as home base for insect catching. I also got a new lifer there, this Willow Flycatcher. Isn't it sweet?
