This is Bart.

Bart was a fierce guardian to his owner. When his owner’s Parkinson’s disease progressed, forcing a move to a temporary bedroom setup in the downstairs dining room, Bart took up a permanent post. This moment captures Bart doing exactly what he felt born to do: watching over his human while he rested. But the most heartbreakingly beautiful part of Bart’s story happened later. After his owner passed away, the bed was taken out of the dining room. Yet, Bart never forgot. Until his final day on earth, he would walk to that exact spot in the room, circle the empty space, and stand in this exact, guarded pose. True loyalty doesn't end when a life does. This project taught me how to look for the deep emotional undercurrents in everyday life, shaping the photographer I am today.

Presence

These two photographs explore dementia not only as a condition experienced by one person, but as a journey shared between two lives. The first image offers a glimpse into the quiet interior world of a man living with memory loss. The second reflects the experience of witnessing—where reflections, screens, and everyday objects create layers of observation, memory, and connection.

Reflections aren’t just what we see in a mirror—they are what we carry with us. They reveal the details of a face I know and love, yet sometimes feels just out of reach. In my earlier series, I Forget to Remember, I searched for the child within. Here, I am learning to sit with the man who remains.

We are both suspended within these layers. Him, in the quiet fog of memory. Me, reflected in the glass—a witness, a caregiver, a daughter-in-law capturing the time we have left.

Together, these images examine what remains when certainty fades: the act of showing up, of paying attention, and of staying connected across time, distance, and changing realities.

At their heart, these images are about presence.
