A few years ago, a lovely pair of siblings contacted me to gift their youngest sibling with a session to capture her and her dog of 13+ years, who only had a few more weeks to live.

I still recall this session so vividly because of the impending grief and love that were so present between these two. It’s a life long dream of mine to get a dog and if things go according to plan, we will own an black/tan lab in the near future and I’ll finally get to experience this special connection I’ve been craving to know since childhood 🐾

Can’t believe summer is almost over! After this weekend + one more newborn session this AM, I’m headed to Seattle to visit good friends from each decade of my life who call the Pacific NW home. Then…capturing old Quebec City and kayaking Moosehead Lake will cap this summer off.

My fall dates are almost completely booked! Decided to bundle all our kids activities to weekdays so any weekends where I’m not shooting multiple sessions, we are headed to Mt. Greylock, the White Mountains, or the coasts of Maine for some serious hiking! Despite living very urban lives M-F, my spouse and I are on mission to instill a love of nature in our kids and being in the outdoors as much as possible.

And…cannot get enough of this family! This little one never disappoints with her contagious energy and joy ✨

Being able to preserve a sense of wonder + awe for all the small and fleeting things at all stages of life is a top priority for me and my kids help me stay grounded in this place given their natural curiosity and excitement over all the things we as adults learn to take for granted— such as new tic tac flavors (we discovered Dr. Pepper flavored ones at a gas station), the doorbell ringing (who could it be…), or the magic of lava lamps (oil and water and dye can do what??). Here are a few moments just in the past week where I felt these states:

✨Seeing Hayla perform the song “Enough” live…I practically cry each time I hear it

✨Capturing a couple show just as much patience and calm towards each other as their newborn during a session

✨Walking through Harvard Sq. at night…I sometimes forget how “alive” and buzzing my neighborhood is

✨Getting excited with my daughter as she explained every part of a diorama she made at camp of a dressing room

Working in many tight and small Cambridge spaces requires me to shift more towards intimate details, close and moody nuzzles, and getting creative with available color schemes near pockets of window light. Love this set…also, can’t get enough of this blue silk dress 🩵

Most of the time, I draw a complete blank when thinking about what to write under my posts. Updating my insta feed is the only form of “marketing” I started regularly doing again but I’m pretty sure my algorithm is so all over the place and inconsistent that insta has no idea where to show my content most of the time (per my stats). The vast majority of my clients either find me via a local google search, word of mouth, or are repeat clients.

That being said, I’ve reached a point in my career where I no longer can or need to keep old client galleries from years ago. This public ether helps me “keep” favorites from each gallery without needing to eat up precious hard drive space and I appreciate being able to visually track my evolution year by year.

My favorite feature in Lightroom is magnifying the black tones in my images. Particularly for newborn sessions, the dark and moody look gives an aura of tenderness, depth, quiet, reflection, and mystery that I feel captures the best facets of this time.

Katie Gilligan, so lucky I get to see you all multiple times this year. This set with the pastel greens and purples is still one of my all time favorites ✨

In my other job, I’ve worked with hundreds of couples and dozens of families and observed how people move through friction, misunderstandings, and pain points in their relationships not only with their spouses, but with their kids as well.

I’m almost 100% convinced that more than any social category and background overlaps, core values, lifestyle, communication skills, or income level the most important area of compatibility and source of day to day, week to week, and year to year happiness is through shared humor. Sarcasm, shared jokes, watching videos (my spouse and I bonded over many Key & Peele shorts), making fun of each other…any form of it.

Couples who can laugh together multiple times per day, no matter what is going on, seem to be able to get through so many challenges faster and with more patience and care. Even in the midst of bad fights, if people an interject a well timed pun or sprinkle in some levity, it can dramatically shift how an interaction unfolds.

Some of my favorite memories of people I’ve loved and still love are from my dreams…🌙
