During the War of 1812, the fort played a significant role in the defense of Baltimore. The fort is situated on a picturesque location at the mouth of the Patapsco River. Some people believe Fort Howard is haunted, and it has become the subject of local ghost stories and paranormal investigations. One of the most famous ghost stories associated with Fort Howard involves a figure known as “Doctor Weems.” According to local legend, Doctor Weems was a physician stationed at the fort during the 19th century, possibly during the Civil War era. Since then, there have been numerous reported sightings of a ghostly figure dressed in a tattered and blood-stained doctor’s uniform, roaming the grounds of Fort Howard. Witnesses have described feelings of sadness, empathy, and a sense of urgency when encountering this apparition.
