Good morning.

Most of us only read this verse in December:

“I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” Luke 1:38

This week I found it in my study Bible with an old note in the margin, in my handwriting, undated: I don’t need further explanation.

The same angel made two visits in Luke 1. A seasoned priest in the Temple asked for proof. A young girl in Nazareth asked how, got an answer that explained almost nothing, and said yes.

Then the angel left her.

That’s usually where obedience happens. Not in the moment of the yes, but in the ordinary days after, when nobody else can see the promise.

So here’s a question for a Monday in October: "what am I waiting for God to explain before I’ll say yes?"

This is not a marketing asset. If it performs, fine. That is not the job.

The job is that in fifteen years somebody who works there and never met you can watch it and understand what you were actually trying to build.

Everything else you make gets replaced. This does not, because nobody can make it once you are not here to sit in the chair.

The disciples watched Jesus heal the sick, calm a storm and silence the experts.

They never asked Him to teach them how to do any of that.

They asked Him to teach them to pray.

The prayer He gave them has no I in it. No my. Every request is plural: our Father, give us, forgive us, lead us.

And there was one line Jesus never needed to pray for Himself. He had no debts to forgive.

So on the cross, He prayed it for us.

“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Luke 23:34

A recent Sunday at Anchor Community Church sent me home rethinking how I pray. This week’s Still Small Voice walks through the six movements of the Lord’s Prayer, with one practical step for each.

The night before the cross, Jesus told His friends one thing: abide in me.
Then they fell asleep in the garden while He prayed. They couldn’t stay awake one hour.

He stayed anyway.

Most of us hear abide and picture a quiet room with a candle. That’s not where we live. We live in the car, the inbox, the meeting we dread, the kitchen at 10 p.m.

So this week I walked through an ordinary day with scripture, from the first breath to the last thought before sleep.

“It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.” Psalm 127:2

Someone stays awake all night. It doesn’t have to be you.
