If Two Is Company, Is Three Perfection?

Lens-Artists Challenge #400: Rule of Three Is Odd Always Better? When this post goes live, I’ll be spending time with family and friends in Brazil.Any comments you make are appreciated, and I’ll respond to them in due time. Photography has so many rules that anyone trying to learn composition can feel overwhelmed. Others simply trust their intuition. This week, Tina covers a rule that not many people may have heard of: the…...

Love Dance

Queen of the Meadow I was out walking and photographing wildflowers at Southwest Williamson County Regional Park when a movement in the grass caught my eye. A Greater Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus) — not an unusual sight on the Texas trails I frequent — but this one carried something I had never noticed before: a vivid band of orange blazing behind the eye, as if someone had painted it there just for the occasion....

The Lemony Neighbor — Horsemint Blooms in the Texas Spring

A Field of Fragrant Tiers I really like springtime in Texas. Besides excellent weather, the display of wildflowers is a continuous show. In mid-May, we are finding lots of fields covered with Firewheels (Gaillardia pulchella). Although the vibrant hues of reds and yellows create a beautiful display, as seen in my post last week, I often find myself searching for another wildflower that begins to pop up at this time of the year: Horsemint (...

🇺🇸🇧🇷 On the Edge of Blooming "The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper." — W.B. Yeats
There's something almost impossible about a moment like this — a small creature holding on, the bud still closed, the world waiting. This American Sunflower Moth (Homoeosoma electellum), clinging to an unidentified flower bud at the Sunken Garden in San Gabriel Park in Georgetown, TX, looked like it was defying gravity. One gust of wind, one blink, and it would have been gone. The American Sunflower Moth is a native species whose larvae feed on sunflower heads — but here it was, resting on something entirely different, as if it had its own idea of where to be that morning. Macro Monday has a way of revealing worlds that ask nothing of us — except to slow down and look.

Magenta Skies and a Double Rainbow
After the thunderstorms rolled through Round Rock, the sky over our neighborhood in the Gardens of Teravista painted itself in deep orange and magenta — and then gifted us a double rainbow. 🌈🌈 We watched the arc shift from a cool, deep blue on one side to layers of pink and magenta on the other, with a second, softer rainbow hovering just above the first. Some evenings, all you have to do is step outside.

Magenta Skies and a Double Rainbow

Double Arc Over Teravista Two days ago, after a series of thunderstorms rolled through our area in Round Rock, the sky outside our living room window began to glow in a way that stopped us in our tracks. It was just past 8:20 in the evening, and something in that light told us to go outside. We were not disappointed. The entire sky had transformed into a living canvas of deep orange and magenta — colors so vivid they made our neighborhood in the Gardens of Teravista feel like a different world....

Lens-Artists Challenge #399: Stuck in Place

Stuck, Looking Beyond At one time or another, some of us feel a lack of inspiration or motivation to photograph new things. Some people address those times by going out with only one lens. Others force a change in perspective by switching to monochrome. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Ritva’s color challenge from last week, for example, is another way to spark fresh ideas....

Carcará in Texas: Meeting the Crested Caracara

The Mexican Eagle in Profile During a recent walk at Berry Springs Park & Preserve in Georgetown, Texas, one of my friends pointed out this Crested Caracara in a distant field. That was a lifer for me. I had heard about this bird of prey but had never encountered one. It was wonderful to watch it move around the field, looking for something to eat....

Bee Together — A Partnership That Sustains Us All
"The hum of bees is the voice of the garden." — Elizabeth Lawrence
Today is World Bee Day 🐝 — a UN-designated observance held every May 20 to celebrate pollinators and the vital role they play in our ecosystems. This Western Honey Bee (Apis mellifera), spotted this afternoon at the Copperfield Nature Trail in Austin, was deep in the business of foraging on Firewheel (Gaillardia pulchella) — a Texas native wildflower that bees absolutely love. Look closely at the golden pollen coating its legs and body — that's nature's delivery system at work. Bees pollinate roughly 75% of the world's flowering plants and contribute to about 35% of global food production. Without them, our tables — and our wildflower meadows — would look very different.

Juntos pelas Abelhas — Uma Parceria que nos Sustenta a Todos
"O zumbido das abelhas é a voz do jardim." — Elizabeth Lawrence

A Field Aflame — and the One That Wasn’t

A Prairie Aflame A week ago, a friend invited me to join him for an early-morning walk through an open field in Pflugerville, where wildflowers were growing undisturbed. The day was windy, but the light was generous, and the field had been waiting. The view was simply beyond my expectations. Firewheels (Gaillardia pulchella) and Stiff Greenthreads (Thelesperma filifolium…...
