It's not often that a full city block goes up for sale in downtown Fort Worth. We were fortunate to get this opportunity to provide aerial photographs and additional graphics for this client, who is getting a ton of positive media coverage! If you need aerial photographs or video, let's talk!

The site is only two blocks from the new Texas A&M downtown campus and adjacent to the $700 million expansion of the Fort Worth Convention Center.

This bears repeating from time to time. Just like all other retailers in Texas, we add 8.25% sales tax to every job. Because the state of Texas takes 8.25% of sales earnings every quarter. Sorry, folks.

This is the first in what I hope will be a long series of university and stadium photographs. I already also have A&M and TCU, with plans for several more. I know lots of people would love a neat picture of their old college campus, stadium, etc. Thanks Mark Flowers for being the first customer!

My real estate clients ask me all the time, "If I get a camera like yours, will my pictures look like yours?" Answer, "no, not without a lot of work." It's far more the technique than the camera. The final result you see in most real estate and interior photographs is not from one photo, but a blend of at least two photos. The obstacle is that there is too much of a difference in the amount of light from the bright windows to the darker parts of the room, and the camera can't capture that range of light all in one shot. So you put the camera on a tripod, and you take multiple shots from the exact same position. I take at least one "natural light" shot, and at least one flash shot, then I blend those photos on a computer. The natural light shot is exposed very brightly, and gives you the texture of the natural shadows and highlights coming into the room. The flash shot is exposed a little darker to capture the windows, and provides the most accurate lighting and color. See the photos in this series for an example. First is the finished product, followed by the natural light shot, then the flash shot. You have to know how to take those two photos correctly, and you have to know how to blend them for the final product.

This photo is *almost* illegal. Flying west of downtown Fort Worth with a good understanding of what was around me, I was taking care to remain at low altitude here. But if I were to have gone up just a little, and flown very slightly to the north (left), I would have violated the airspace of Meacham Airport. You can see the chart in the second photo, where my drone is represented by the red dot at lower left. I could have flown into Meacham airspace with the proper clearance and communication with air traffic control. But I didn’t have that, so I made sure to fly low and not far past the bridge. All modern drones can be immediately tracked to the person flying them, and I would have potentially been subject to a hefty fine.

Knowing these charts and all the various layers of altitude limits and no-fly zones is essential to the safe operation of a UAV. Anybody can legally launch a drone and take this picture, given that they’ve received the proper clearance for the relevant airspace. But if you’re going to do it for commercial purposes, in any way, you must have a “Part 107” certificate from the FAA (3rd photo). That applies not only to photographers selling their pictures, but also people like realtors who will use photos for their listings, or a guy who runs a small business and just wants a picture for his website. If the photo benefits your business in any way, it can legally only be taken by a licensed operator.

The simplest and safest way to get business-related photos and videos from a drone is to hire someone with the license. A person like me then becomes responsible for maintaining the certification, knowing the airspace, flying safely and holding enough insurance to cover any damages that might occur. FAA fines for violating airspace or operating commercially without a license have been known to exceed $10,000. Like making repairs to your car or home, it is most often the wisest course to simply hire a pro. If you are in need of commercial drone photos or video, I'd love to help. Please share!
