Celebrating Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month: Allen E. Ho, SOC ⁣

“I was born and raised in California by immigrant parents in a traditional Chinese household where humility, discipline and hard work were expected. Like a lot of kids growing up with “tiger parents,” I learned early to keep my head down, work hard and not draw too much attention to myself.⁣

That mindset shaped a lot of who I am. It taught me persistence, attention to detail and respect for the craft. But it also made me naturally soft-spoken in an industry that often rewards the loudest voice in the room. Often I find myself being the only Asian person on a crew, and I spent a long time feeling like I had to fit into the culture around me instead of fully being myself within it.⁣

Working as a camera operator has challenged me to grow into someone who can confidently take up space, communicate clearly and trust my instincts while still staying collaborative. Operating has become another language for me — a way to interpret emotion, movement and perspective through visual storytelling. I think growing up between cultures taught me how to observe closely, adapt constantly and understand that there are multiple ways to see and experience the same moment. That perspective has deeply shaped the way I move through the world and the way I operate a camera.⁣

Often I find that I am the only Asian person on a film crew, and for a long time I used to think being different was something I had to overcome. What once made me feel different has ultimately become one of my greatest strengths — both in how I collaborate with people and how I approach storytelling.”⁣

𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘖𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 Archive—“Establishing Shot”⁣

“Establishing Shot” by David Sammons, SOC is a personal reflection on the unlikely, winding path into a career as a camera operator. Beginning with the inspiration sparked by Star Wars and the behind-the-scenes documentary 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳 𝘞𝘢𝘳𝘴, Sammons traces his early fascination with filmmaking through his first on-set experiences in the California desert, where he gradually learned the discipline and pressure of camera work. From his first nervous stunt setup on a high-speed Arriflex III to his entry into the union and the turning points that followed, he charts the steady progression from production assistant to camera assistant to operator. Key breaks on projects like 𝘓𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘺𝘵𝘰𝘸𝘯, where he earned his first operating credit, and later episodic work such as 𝘓𝘈𝘟, 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘊𝘢𝘴𝘦, and 𝘔𝘢𝘥 𝘔𝘦𝘯, illustrate how mentorship, persistence, and seizing opportunity shaped his career. Ultimately, the article is a candid, ground-level account of learning the craft under pressure and finding a lasting place behind the camera in film and television production.⁣

Celebrating Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the SOC would also like to highlight its Asian members outside of the US:⁣ Thai Steadicam Operator Watcharawit “Koon” Ya-inta, SOC, ACO ⁣:

First, thank you to the Society of Camera Operators for this opportunity. It truly means a great deal to me to be recognized by a community that has shaped so much of who I am today.⁣

My journey with the SOC began as a student member, growing into an associate member, & now an active member. A large part of my development took place in the US, where I dedicated myself to learning & refining the craft of camera operating. Those years were formative both professionally and personally.⁣

What I’ve come to realize is how privileged I am to call this my career. Camera operating is more than a job; it’s a way of seeing. It shapes how I observe life, connect with people, & translate emotion into motion.⁣

After returning to Thailand, I’ve been fortunate to work on projects such as Alien Earth S1, Marvel’s Thunderbolts, Hacks S4, The Flight Attendant S1, Netflix’s Kate, Apple TV’s Shantaram, & many others.⁣

In recent years, I’ve also committed to giving back. I hold seminars & teach Steadicam workshops annually. Since 2019 I’ve had the privilege of teaching over 60 students. I plan to continue to help guide the next generation into this field.⁣

At the same time, my passion has expanded into building tools for operators. I started Ya-inta Cine Gear Engineering (.cine), developing practical solutions from design to manufacturing. All of this comes from embracing this career & wanting to contribute back to my fellow brothers & sisters.⁣

I’m proud, grateful, & truly privileged to be part of this community.⁣

𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘖𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 magazine Archive—“Pose: Having a Ball”⁣

In “𝘗𝘰𝘴𝘦: 𝘏𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘉𝘢𝘭𝘭,” Kate McCallum captures a conversation with camera operators Peter Vietro-Hannum () and Wylda Baron about bringing the vibrant world of Pose to life. Set against the backdrop of 1980s–90s New York ballroom culture, the series—created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Steven Canals—is described as both groundbreaking in representation and emotionally immersive in its storytelling. Vietro-Hannum highlights the show’s dynamic, anything-goes visual style—wide lenses, kinetic movement, and multi-camera coverage—especially during elaborate Ball sequences that blend performance, fashion, and chaos into a cinematic spectacle.⁣

Baron emphasizes the deeply collaborative and intuitive nature of operating, where spontaneity, trust, and chemistry with the crew shape each shot in real time. Both operators underscore that beyond the technical craft, the heart of Pose lies in its cast—led by performers like Mj Rodriguez and Billy Porter—whose raw, personal performances often blurred the line between acting and lived experience. Together, the interview frames Pose as a rare production where style, story, and social impact converge, creating a set environment defined as much by joy and community as by craft.⁣
