Native species—those rooted in the land since the beginning—mirror the first humans who moved with the seasons, lived off the landscape, and hunted not for sport, but survival. Hunting on that ground echoes that origin: not conquest, but continuity. A bond between those who’ve always been here & the wild that shaped them.

Though we’ve reshaped the land, we still fight for those species—working the balance between progress and preservation, adapting so they endure alongside us.

Is this the new modern West?
Rusting buildings sinking into the dust,
sharp-tailed grouse rising beneath an endless sky,
and westslope cutthroat slipping through cold, forgotten streams.
These days, it’s rare to find a stretch of open range
untouched by wire, road, or rooftop—
but follow the quiet rhythm of certain species,
and you might just wander
into a place that feels like the unknown.

Every so often, you encounter a truly extraordinary bird. These shots capture a moment I never anticipated; a bloodied male sage grouse, battle-worn and defiant. After witnessing this fierce display again and again, I became hyper fixated , striving to capture every angle, every fleeting expression of his struggle.

Each time I observe these birds on a lek in the spring, my respect for them deepens. Whether fighting for dominance in the breeding hierarchy or, unknowingly, for survival against the slow degradation of their sagebrush habitat, they embody resilience. Their future is uncertain; these birds could vanish within our lifetime. But that outcome is not inevitable. Let’s ensure it isn’t.
