One handsome guy! The Rose-breasted Grosbeak or ‘Pheucticus Ludovicianus’ this is a very plump bird that almost reminds me of a parrot! In my opinion though haha. They have a triangular rose patch on the center of their chest (mostly the males) with a THICK beak. The male and female will construct the nest together and have 1-2 broods per year. They usually have about 3-5 blue-green eggs with brown markings on them during those times. Migrating from Mexico, Central America, and South America looking for insects, fruits, and seeds. These are a big summer bird (I don’t blame them) and right now is the best time to see them!

My all time favorite bird. The Northern Flicker ‘Colaptes Auratus’ the male and female are almost alike except the male has a black mustache! This handsome fella was flying back and forth from tree to tree. These guys are part of the woodpecker family, but often feed not only in trees, but on the ground! Searching for ants and beetles. When these guys spread their wings they have bright yellow feathers and a spotted tummy! So glad I was able to get a closer look at this bird over the weekend.

My first ever purple finch ‘Carpodacus Purpureus’ what a beauty! This is a year round resident in New York even though this is my first time ever seeing one. They will fly around with house finches looking for seeds at the feeder. Even though these little guys don’t exactly have the color purple on them, “purpureus” means crimson or reddish color. They prefer open woods or woodland edges, but this guy loved the tree at the pizzeria… 🍕

The Chipping Sparrow or ‘Spizella Passerina’. Your common neighboring bird has arrived! Feasting typically at the bird feeder in your backyard. Here’s a fun fact about this guy: “The oldest recorded Chipping Sparrow was at least 10 years, 11 months old when it was recaptured and rereleased during banding operations in Ontario in 1998.“ - (allaboutbirds.org)

Hello there Mr. ‘Agelaius Phoeniceus’ or Red-winged Blackbird! This is one popular guy in New York. Seeing these are a sure sign that spring is here! Though we’ve had some snow the past 2 days (unfortunately) the temps should be warming up soon. Which means these birds will be returning to the marshes and disturbing your peace at the local fishing spot lol. Other news spring is here!

The king himself! ‘Cardinalis Cardinalis’ or the northern cardinal. ‘Cardinalis’ is a latin word meaning important. This is a male cardinal (in case you don’t know). He is your typical backyard bird that’s flying around looking for seeds, insects, and fruit with his mate! You’ll find a male and female usually flying together snacking at each tree. These guys can be very territorial especially during the spring. The male feeds the babies by himself the first round while momma is out there building a nest! Listen for them the next time you’re out since they love to sing!

Early bird gets the…..tree? A stunning woodpecker was my model for yesterday’s evening session! This is a female ‘Picoides Pubescens’ or the Downy Woodpecker. The males have a red mark on their head while the females lack the color (rude lol). These are non-migratory birds and they live off of insects, seeds, and your local bird feeder. These woodpeckers will actually drum on branches or hollow logs to announce their territories! Who knew they would be so talented 😉.

The ‘Cyanocitta Cristata’ or the blue jay. This guy is a non-migrator (depending) on the abundance of food. They relay on insects, fruit, seeds, nuts, and your neighbor’s bird feeder. That’s not all! They are also known for eating other bird’s eggs and even younger birds in nests! While frolicking through the woods being a thief, these blue jays are known for being the alarm of the forest as well. Squawking at every intruder on their stomping grounds. Glad I was able to catch this guy snuggled up in the branches!
