All I wanted was to be thin. At least, that’s what my 27-year-old self believed as she laced up for her first half marathon. She wasn’t chasing a finish line; she was chasing approval. She thought thinness would unlock love. She thought it would quiet the chaos outside of her. She thought if she could just take up less space, she’d somehow become more successful.

But she didn’t yet understand fuel, recovery, or self-love. She pushed hard, measured herself against everyone else, and called deprivation discipline.

Now—ten years later—the woman standing at the start line wants something entirely different. She wants fun. She wants strength. She wants endurance, sustainability, connection. She’s not running to escape herself anymore. She’s running to meet herself.

This season, I wanted to run to be connected to nature. I wanted to carve out intentional time for myself so I could show up as the best mother, wife, friend, and daughter…after my cup was filled first. I wanted to feel strong, to reconnect with my roots as a wanderer and gatherer. I wanted those early morning miles with a new friend, before the sun or our families stirred, when we could simply arrive as ourselves, unfiltered and unhurried.

I bought this bright red tutu the day I signed up for the race, as a testament to how much freaking fun I was going to have and how not-seriously I was going to take myself after the crossing the start line.

And yes, I wanted the runner’s high too. That spark that reminded me I was capable of more, that carried me into challenges in every area of my life I might have otherwise let slip by. Running wasn’t about shrinking anymore. It was about expanding into joy, into strength, and into potential.

Thanks so much to for these shots!
