The last year or so has been very unmotivating for obvious reasons and others. I randomly decided to get on a plane and fly to Arizona to try and get back into photography. My first stop was in Sedona where I wanted to capture Cathedral Rock. The sky was not very photogenic, so I had to challenge myself and come up with a composition that worked. I’m not so mad about the result 🙂

Do you know what Buena Vista means in Spanish?

I’ve been researching spots in CO to photograph, and since we got so much snow this winter, it was hard to find a lake that’s not still fully or partially frozen. I literally opened up Google Maps, found Cottonwood Lake in Buena Vista, and I’m so glad I did. The surrounding area of the lake was still snowy and muddy, but it was absolutely worth it. There was a couple of people fishing, and the skies were mostly sunny. We hung out around the lake for a while until the clouds started to creep in. I will definitely be going back this summer.

Where should I go next?

Have you ever been to the Hanging Lake in Glenwood Springs?

I woke up at 4am on Saturday to drive to the Hanging Lake, which is possibly one of the most photographed sights in Colorado. We arrived around 8am, and the parking lot was already packed. Luckily, there was one lady that was leaving just as we were pulling up, so she totally saved the day. This weekend marks the last weekend before permits are enforced. Starting May 1st, you will have to pay $12 per person to hike this trail (this fee covers taking the shuttle to the trailhead). It’s absolutely a must see if you haven’t been there before 👍🏽

Can you tell the mountains apart from the clouds?.
I drove to Breckenridge hoping to get to Blue Lakes to shoot the sunset, but unfortunately the weather wasn’t cooperating. It was cold and snowy, and the roads were very slippery. I managed to get somewhere on Blue Lakes Road, hiked about a mile or so, turned around, and discovered this view. Not what I had in mind, but I think it works 😁.

Standing on the Big Thompson River, witnessing the sun light as it pierces through the trees, melting away the remainings of winter (ok, I need to stop now 😅).
I got to finally meet and this weekend, and we drove early to to shoot the sunrise. We were promised a cloudy/rainy morning, but of course there were barely any clouds in the sky. What do you do when faced with that situation? You make do by finding a comp that works. After all, I didn’t drive 80 miles for nothing 💩.
Side note: I apologize for my absence as I had so much going on in the past couple of months. The upside is, I’m back in Colorado. For good 😁.

You know how some days when your gut feeling tells you that tonight’s sunset is gonna be bomb, so you drive or hike to a spot, get your gear ready and wait until you realize that your gut feeling was totally lying to you? Well, yesterday wasn’t one of these days.. Sort of. I drove to Vista House along the Columbia River Gorge because I had a specific comp in mind, but unfortunately, it was too foggy and rainy for what I wanted to go for. So, I pull up Google Maps, look for a spot nearby, and luckily I found Rooster Rock State Park which is literally a couple of miles away from where I was. Having no expectations, I rushed there, quickly scouted for a comp, and ended up with this result! I would say, that was a lucky last minute find 😁

Interesting fact: I later learned that this park is “clothing optional” 😅

This weekend, we started the day off at Bridal Veil Falls which is a cool teeny hike to a beautiful waterfall. We then decided to drive to Lost Lake, hoping to get there before sunset. After about 70 miles of driving, we finally got there just in time for blue hour. I literally had no time to compose my shot, and had to act quickly before it got too dark. Thankfully, there was this ginormous tree at the lake, and I decided this is going to be my foreground. The temperature was at freezing 32 degrees, and some parts of the road were already icy. Let’s just say, this was totally a successful last minute trip 😁

I finally got to do some exploring around Oregon this weekend. Yesterday, I drove to Government Camp where Trillium Lake is. I was hoping for a colorful sunset, but unfortunately the weather was too gloomy for colors to pop. Because of that, I decided to add some eeriness to my photo, and that’s why I used this dead tree as a foreground. I know it’s a bit distracting, but Mt. Hood wasn’t looking particularly all that pretty either. I was hoping the clouds will clear up before it got too dark, but of course that didn’t happen. It was raining when I snapped this shot, and the temperature was below 40 degrees (pretty sure my fingers were numb already 😅)

On my drive to Portland, I stopped at Twin Falls in Idaho to rest for the night. Before I got there, the Airbnb lady suggested I visit the Shoshone Falls as it was about 7 miles away from her house. I decided to stop by on my way since timing worked out perfectly for sunset. Sadly, the falls were almost completely dried up. Little did I know, on the opposite side of the falls was this glorious view of the Snake River. I waited until the lighting was just right, and snapped a couple of photos. At the end of the day, I learned that Idaho is another beautiful state that’s worth exploring 🏞

On our hike to Ice Lake, we kept asking people how far we were from the lake. Ironically, no matter how far we actually were, everyone seemed to think we’re halfway. This just shows that most people lack a sense of distance (myself included 😅). I took this shot on the steepest part of the hike as we were waiting for the sunlight to hit the yellow trees on the left ridge (of course that didn’t end up happening). Bear Mountain is the mountain you see in the distance and that’s Lower Ice Lake to the right.

If you haven’t already, go check out the video of our trip on Taylor Bunner Photography page. We had good times making it 🙃

This is Ice Lake; the bluest lake in Colorado that’s not called blue lake (Ironic, isn’t it? 😁). I have never seen a lake this blue in my life. It’s absolutely remarkable. We were tired from the steep hike, and I was hoping to find a comp that didn’t require more hiking. I found this big rock that’s literally pointing to the lake, and I decided this was my comp. Luckily, there was a couple taking photos at the lake, which added a sense of scale to the image. Finally, some dude decided it was a good idea jumping in the ice cold water, and that’s when caught the whole ordeal on tape (the guy was totally fine, it just gave me goosebumps thinking how cold the water was 😬).

More photos to come from this hike 😎

This weekend has been full of adventures. I got to meet and hang out with (check him out, he’s awesome), spent two nights in Ouray, and hiked all the way up to Island Lake. The day started off cloudless with a blinding sun. We took off at Ice Lake Basin trail, and this by far marks the most difficult hike I’ve ever done. It’s a very steep, 6-mile hike that builds to more than 3,000 feet of elevation gain. However, it’s worth every minute as the views along the way are incredible. About halfway from getting to the top, clouds started forming, and that’s when it drizzled on us. As we approached Ice Lake, the rain turned into light snow I almost couldn’t believe it. Finally, we had to take an even steeper 0.6-mile trail to get to Island Lake. I waited until the sun peaked through the clouds to snap this shot 🌥

Stay tuned for more content from this hike 🤘🏼
