You see this beautiful healthy tree, but do you see what it's standing on?

I think this picture says a lot about resilience and about perception. Does your perception of this tree change when you realize what's below it? It makes me think of how we see others, our coworkers & strangers in our daily lives, especially those we only know from their social media posts.

We really never know, what's just below the surface, do we?

Definitely a Chickadee, based on range this should be a Carolina Chickadee, but based on the white tips on the wings it should be a Black-Capped Chickadee. I guess I could spend the day trying to figure it out, but Monday's are stressful enough. So I'm just going to say, look at this cute Chickadee standing on a branch 😁

I took this picture with my phone at a rest stop 😄 I figure if they care enough to plant flowers at rest stops, the least we can do is take a second to appreciate them ❤️ 🌸

I had a wonderful weekend traveling and made it home safe. How are this Sunday evening?

Soul Searching Sundays-

Today's discussion question is a little different. Hopefully, we can all agree that painting on living trees is a bad idea. But what about painting on no longer living trees? Is this art, vandalism or something else?

Juvenile Yellow-Crowned Night Heron guessing this one was 10-12 weeks old because that's when they start foraging on their own and I didn't see any adults nearby. Like a lot of young shore birds, they start out a muddy brown speckled color and change their feathers slowly overtime to match the stunning adult colors. I was surprised to the beautiful multicolor plumage on this bird's back. Will have black & white wings and gray body when fully mature.

Goth Dragonfly 👹

Ok fine, I made that name up because I don't know what kind it was. But after looking it up, my best guess is Marl Pennant Skimmer Dragonfly. It says that they feed on smaller insects in flight like mosquitos and flies (fitting for a goth 😆). If that's true, it makes me a big fan of this guy. Also, it would be a guy, because the females are lighter in color.

Does this look like a tangles mess of roots? That's because it is 😲🪾 It's something that happens in all forests, but we don't get to see very often.

The beach these trees grew up on on has eroded away, but the trees are still standing. Why? Tree roots intertwine with other trees and it helps the entire forest become stronger. Growing trees are competing for sunlight, water & nutrients in the soil, but they are also holding each other up.

We can learn so much from nature. Trees show us that competition and cooperation can exist at the same time in a healthy way.🤝 It reminds us that nothing in nature is truly surviving on it's own. Also, the support they offer each other is occurring quietly underground. 🫂We can help & support each other in small ways on daily basis. It doesn't have to be a big show. It doesn't even have to be for purely altruistic reasons either. It can be because if others fall, we will eventually fall too.

Photographing black birds present similar challenges to the white birds I talked about in yesterday's post. Their details tend to get lost in shadows. In the crow pictures, I posted last week, I just let them be full black silhouettes for the impact and drama of it, which I often do. I wanted a little more detail for these bird shots.

I love how the light fell because the coloring of the red-winged blackbird really stands out. I also love how the lichen growing on the decomposing tree gave it a very fitting slightly spooky look. It's fun to note that the species was named for this male coloring. The female red-winged blackbird has completely different coloring. They have shades of brown stripes and look more like sparrows.

I went the opposite way with the Turkey Vulture. They creep people out enough, just as they are. I wanted to give you guys the opportunity to really see the details of this misunderstood & often vilified bird. I pulled back some of the shadows in photoshop so you could see the definition of it's wing feathers and it's brownish coat. Some people assume they are completely black. Some people assume they are clairvoyant and know death is imminent. They don't. They know something is already dead by the smell.

Both of these birds are common all over North America. They both prefer warmer weather, so you might only see them in the north in the summer. Red-winged blackbirds are similar in size to Grackles and often just as noisy. Turkey Vultures are larger than Black Vultures and smaller than Bald Eagles. If you see them flying, vultures fly with bent V-shaped wings and Eagles with wings straight across.

Apparently, the Great White Egret did not find this fishing spot up to its standards. Flew in, poked around a bit, then flew off again. I just looked up the differences between this egret and the Great Blue Heron I posted yesterday. As it turns out, besides color & size there aren't a lot of differences between the two.

As a matter of fact, they are scientifically in the same family, Egrets are a subgroup of Herons, basically the only difference is that Egrets tend to be smaller. Great Blue Herons get to be 4.5 feet tall & Great White Egrets only 3 feet with a much shorter wing span.

Their coloring makes them easier to see and harder to photograph. The all white plumage reflects the sunlight and messes with camera sensors. It takes a bit of effort to get the lighting right, so you can see the detail in their wings instead of just a big glowing white bird with no definition.
