Sad news. I really enjoyed the opportunity to make this video with Doug as he guided the last Cianbro module down the Penobscot River. Fair winds and following seas Doug.

Douglas A. Fournier, obituary

Douglas A. Fournier
NORTHPORT — Capt. Douglas A. Fournier, of Northport, Maine, died July 2 at his home after a short battle with brain cancer; he was 43. Doug was born in Rockport, Maine to the late Capt. Arthur J. Fournier and Beth Fournier.

Doug grew up between Saturday Cove, Northport and Marshall Wharf, Belfast. Growing up on the banks of Penobscot Bay helped flourish Doug’s love of boating and fishing. The bay was his playground. Doug followed his father into the family business of tug boating. He always joked his father had him working before he could walk. A true Hawsepiper, Doug started at the bottom and worked his way up into the wheelhouse as Captain. He then became the second generation of Fournier’s to own and operate Penobscot Bay Tugs in Belfast, Maine with his brother Patrick. He would later achieve a career goal when he earned his First-Class Pilots License and joined the Penobscot Bay & River Pilots Association.

In his spare time, Doug could still be found on the water. He was an avid fisherman, thanks to his grandfather the late Mike Brown, or to National Fishermen readers, Cap’n Perc Sane. Mike taught Doug everything he knew about fishing and lobstering. Doug later made many trips to the Atlantis canyons for big game fishing.

But Doug’s greatest achievements in life were his two children, William and Ella. He was a loving and devoted father. He wasted no time getting them both out on the water and planning their future careers in the maritime industry.

Doug is survived by his wife, Amanda (Briggs); son, William; daughter, Ella; mother, Beth (Brown) Fournier; brothers Patrick Fournier and Brian Fournier; sister, Cathy McClarity; grandmother Mary Brown; aunt, Susan Brown and her partner Ralph Stanley; nieces and nephews.

Proceeded by his father, Capt. Arthur Fournier; grandfather Mike Brown; brother William Fournier; and uncle, Eben Brown.

A celebration of Doug’s life is planned for August 9, 2025, from 2-5 p.m., at the Bayview Point Event Center, 15 Front Street, Belfast, ME.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Doug’s memory to Hospice Volunteers of Waldo County, P.O. Box 772, Belfast, ME 04915.

Another great sunrise. It never gets old. It didn’t last very long. By the time I landed it was just cloudy.
