PVT William Paul Laughlin was mustered out of Athens Ohio to Biloxi Mississippi and then landed in to Normandy, France in 1944 where he served as a machine gunner in the 317th, Laughlin was injured by hostle fire in September 1945 in Germany and subsequently captured, he was a POW until the end of the war and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during combat.

Remembering all those who have fallen, and our own in WWII, and especially those of the Third US Army in their role in the liberation of Europe in France, Belgium, and Luxembourg, and their security in Germany and Austria. The 317th, 318th, and 319th infantry and all those who paid the supreme sacrifice are remembered today.

Today, Dec 31st, 1944 Battle of the Bulge, the 3rd army helps stave off the enemy insurgence by reinforcing defensive positions. On 26 December the lead element of Patton's U.S. Third Army reached Bastogne from the south, ending the siege when the 317th, 318th and 319th aided in the defenses. 89,000 American troops became casualties, 19,000 were killed in just five weeks of fighting. Please remember their sacrifices today as we celebrate New Years Eve.
