One Island, One Morning
One lens, no teleconverters, and whatever the home island decided to give me.
ʻUaʻu kani (Wedge-tailed Shearwater) banking at first light… Manu-o-Kū (White Tern) chasing each other through downtown street trees… then Koaʻe ʻula (Red-tailed Tropicbird) and ʻEwaʻewa (Sooty Tern) working the water off the Kaʻiwi coast. Three completely different worlds, all before lunch.

Yosemite Falls, 2 a.m.
We flew from Oʻahu, drove four hours in the dark, and stood in a cold meadow looking at what my eyes saw as a grey smudge.
A full moon puts out enough light to bend a real rainbow through the mist… but it's too dim for human eyes to pick up any color… but the camera captures the full spectrum. Four seconds at f/1.4 and there it is. It only works a handful of nights a year, when the moon is full and the snowmelt is still running.
One of the most incredible nights of my life… so worth not sleeping for

The Death Valley Dunes
Pulled into Death Valley two hours after landing in Vegas, just in time for sunset.
I shot this same dune two years ago, from further away, in 120 degree heat… twenty degrees hotter prevented me from traversing as far as I did on this day. So while 100 degrees of heat is still nuts… I wasn’t letting the heat get the best of me this go around.
So let me know… was this shot worth almost dying of heath exhaustion in Death Valley?

Comet of the Century
The last time this comet passed by, humans didn't even exist yet.
We scouted this tree the day before and set an alarm for 3am for a long drive up the Mauna Kea
I left a headlamp at the base of that Māmane tree, then walking out in the dark that with that little light sitting exactly where it needed to be. One last final check on the comet’s position before it broke the horizon
We then got the most magical, hectic, and beautiful 15 minutes with the “Comet of the Century” C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS)
The hero shot is Darwin Kalani Manuel Lazo He framed the comp he wanted, I guided his positioning, tweaked the settings as the light came up, and pushed the shutter… his photo, our morning.
It's long gone now… but for some reason, I still cannot stop thinking about this morning

Pulled over on the side of the road because I saw this majestic ʻIo (Hawaiian hawk) perched on some dead trees
Waited this whole clip for it to do something epic… and it sure did not disappoint
What's the most anticlimactic wildlife moment you've ever caught on camera?

Fast train. Small bird. Same nose.
The 500-series Shinkansen set off a boom every time it left a tunnel. The engineer who fixed it was a birdwatcher. He copied the kingfisher's bill... 30% less drag, 13% less power.
Photographed this little guy at the Fukuoka Castle moat. 400 years old, still holding fish for these beautiful birds.

I came to Japan for a bird the size of my fist… but these are what caught my attention first
Five in the morning in Fukuoka, barely into the park, and a pair of black kites stops me in my tracks. I didn't fly across the Pacific for these two.
But you don't walk past birds of prey because they weren't on the list.
Cost me the entire first morning… but I’d do it again.
The bird I actually came for took a few more mornings to capture. Full story's on YouTube now.
