:WARNING:
Most of these photos were taken on Graffiti Highway. It is not policed and therefore is covered in - you guessed it - graffiti.

Because of the unregulated nature, some of the graffiti is offensive, obscene, or just plain mean. I attempted to keep most of these out of the photos, but it's impossible to not have some in the frame. They are from the viewpoints of the writer's/artists and not my own.

If you are easiily offended, I would not view this album.
:END OF WARNING:

Centralia, PA is a true ghost town. It was evacuated due to the coal mines underneath the town catching on fire. The fire is still burning today, and is estimated to burn for at least 250 years.

Sadly, I didn't have enough time to fully explore the area. A lot of the town is now hidden in woods and foliage, and I only had a few hours before I'd have to head home.

However, during the time alloted I was able to explore some of the infamous Graffiti Highway.

Originally a home for the nursing staff, this later became a dormitory for nurses training at the Brownsville General Hospital. Later, when it was discovered that women could indeed live on their own, it became a nursing home.

As with the hospital, it was abandoned due to the difficulty with keeping up the old building to current health standards.

Brownsville General Hospital was built in the early 1900's and was first built to give medical treatment to people in the surrounding mine towns. It grew with the population and eventually grew into a teaching hospital that was used in the education of nurses and young doctors.

It was abandoned in the 1980's when it could no longer keep up with the incredibly old building and still have money to maintain their equipment and keep up to code.

I've returned from another adventure! I've been in Pennsylvanian photographing the abandoned Brownsville General Hospital and the old nursing home across the street from it. On my way home, I stopped of in Centralia to take some pictures of it. Sadly, I didn't have enough time to fully explore it as much as I wanted, and really only had time to photograph the infamous Graffiti Highway. Here's a teaser photo for what's coming up!
