In the spirit of Bob Ross, who I probably reference way to frequently, “we don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents.” I dropped this plate on the floor halfway through the process, but despite the stream of vile words echoing throughout the darkroom, it was indeed a happy accident.

One of the stellar things about tintypes is their absolute uniqueness. Each is singular and absolutely one of a kind. Even more, subjects often appear very different from shot to shot.
This is the same human from two posts ago taken a couple weeks apart. Despite the same basic lighting on both of the mugshots, the differences between the two are anything but subtle. If you’ve already had your tintype portrait made, do it again. Change your clothes. Change your photographer. You’ll be surprised.

I was fairly certain that if I showed up to a fancy bike rally folks would want to buy tintype portraits of themselves and their bikes. I had ONE taker, and they didn’t even come back to pay for their portrait. This is them, whoever they are. Lessons learned: I’m a terrible salesperson... money up front... advertise my presence days beforehand... be a better photographer... any others? Suggestions for success?
