The fierce beauty of a male American Kestrel. These incredible raptors are North America's smallest falcon, but what they lack in size they make up for in speed and hunting ability. Those piercing eyes don't miss a thing! 🦅. It was a windy, sunny day, so I cranked up the shutter speed a bit and waited for something fun to happen. When this guy launched off his perch, he launched 180 degrees into the wind, giving me a glimpse of those amazing underbelly patterns.

Haven’t posted for a minute. I had a nasty cold then got consumed by another personal project I will reveal soon. Wanted to get back to sharing some wildlife shots. My first time seeing and capturing a common merganser. I like to try to be at eye level for wildlife, but in this case it was fairly impossible, so I laid on the ground and got as low as I could. Shooting through reeds is what’s causing the warm glow at the bottom of these images. These shots are of a female, none of the males were close enough. Really interesting looking birds.

These moments are the moments that anyone who captures wildlife live for. Nothing comes easy for our wildlife friends. This immature eagle came over and picked a fight, with this adult over food. At the beginning the immature eagle appeared to have the upper hand, but the adult showed how that plumage was earned and ran this young one off to the other side of the lake. Right after this last attack, that immature eagle hightailed it out of there.

Often times while sitting on the shoreline waiting to capture kingfishers, or something else I have planned, I find other things make their way by as well. This particular day 3 pairs of mallards came in to fish the creek. I think my favorite shot of this bunch might be the sleeping female, but I also wanted to capture some shots of the pairs together. I didn’t necessarily need to be shooting these guys at this shutter speed, but I was afraid the second I changed my setting a kingfisher would appear hahaha.

This was my first time capturing a Belted Kingfisher in predation. With birds, males are often the more colorful, but this is a female with that chestnut band across the chest (In my opinion the prettier markings). Unfortunately the light wasn’t great and the river bank background was quite noisy, but it was still a super cool moment, so I am sharing it anyway. I only caught one shot of the dive, before I lost focus on all the background noise. My next goal is to try to capture the moment of entry on the waters surface. These guys are so fast, that next time I will try 1/3200 of a sec. I know several spots where I can observe them now, so it’s only a matter of time before I get some stellar shots.

Almost directly after the chickadee I posted yesterday, I came across this European Starling, and was able to use a similar composition technique, but I like the way the leading lines draw you into the subject here. It’s so nice to get to a point where the equipment isn’t so overwhelming and I can start focusing on creativity. If you’re a photographer of any experience level, I can’t express how important it is to know your equipment inside out, and backwards. Be able to operate it in the dark, it really frees you to focus on the more important aspects of the craft.

I just love this shot of this Black-capped Chickadee taking off sideways, with this swooping branch framing him. You might start to see this as a series of swooping branches as frames. I’ve been playing with different composition framing techniques, and I am finding it to be good fun, and it’s making for more interesting images IMO.

Captured this Juvenile Bald Eagle coming in to fish at sunrise, and was able to get some shots with the mountains as a backdrop. Not often that occasion arises. This was, literally, one of the first shots I took in the field with my new lens, and I love the bokeh as always. The sharpness of that GM glass doesn’t hurt either.

Love it when the Dark-eyed Juncos return for winter. This was the first test shot I took with the new lens, and I was immediately reminded why I wanted it, that bokeh is so nice. I might eventually have to get that 400 f2.8 as well, but for now I will just enjoy what I have and be thankful.
