Yesterday, I took a moment away from the cookbook shoot I’m working on this week and realized that it was exactly five years ago that I arrived on Edisto Island to photograph Gullah Geechee Home Cooking.

Five years doesn’t feel like a long time, but can also feel like a lifetime ago. I’m trying to find words for the experience, for the direction my career took since, for joy I get knowing that I was a part of that book and a small part of Miss Emily’s story.

But, all I can come up with is gratitude. Thank you, Miss Emily. Thank you to the Meggett family, thank you to the team that made it all happen. I’m so grateful.

Scenes from my whirlwind trip to last year with . As much time as I spend on the road, I realize I don’t get around to posting them often here on IG. The algorithm here often doesn’t bother showing posts that aren’t portraits or food, so I mostly end up posting those on Threads.

This morning, I’m kicking off a cookbook shoot, so it feels like a good time to just post what I feel like and get on with my work. Hope you see it!
