Leave a comment below - do you prefer the full moon, the crescent moon, or no moon/Milky Way? It's a close call for me, as each one is beautiful in its own right - but the crescent moon can be as beautiful as anything, that slim little slice of moon floating in the sky! That said - the one thing a full/crescent moon has going for them - they don't always peak in the middle of the night (when I enjoy sleeping 🤣)!

Share this post if you love that sunset glow striking the pier! And be sure to follow my page if you want tips on how I edited this shot, because I've got a few reels and posts coming covering both how I split toned the highlights and shadows, as well as what I did to mask the photo and direct the eye (and add that glow)!

Did you know … it’s visual storytelling time! The Redondo Beach Pier has some stunning scenery! I mean, obviously who could hate the ocean - but then you throw in the sailboats, the sunsets, palm trees and a moon, and everything else there is to see - it’s a fun place to just take the camera, throw on some filters (because, let’s be honest, they’re sooooo good!) and wander, just to see what you can capture!

Know someone that’s in love with Redondo Beach, someone that’s ready to go back, or someone waiting to experience it for the first time? Be sure to share this post with them - and don’t forget to follow my page, lest you want to miss more visual stories!

Aside from looking like that crazy guy with a big camera lens (I’ll get to that later), this is honestly one of the easier shots and edits - it’s nearly out of camera (which is your favorite? Comment below)! Getting that low sun glow before it hits the horizon, I underexposed a little and used spot metering to get this silhouette sailing in the winter sunset. But, why’d I look crazy you ask? It was the sprinting up and down the beach trying to get the right alignment - definitely the hardest part! But, while I felt 🤪, but I don’t think anyone else really noticed! 🤣

If you have friends/family/enemies that love sunsets and sailboats, be sure to share this post with them - and follow my page if you don’t already (and if you do, let me send this huge thank you now!)

What about this photo stands out the most to you? Tell me in the comments!

For me (which I get - is unfair, since it is my shot) there are a few things. First is that I got off my butt and went out to shoot with clear skies (which I have been hesitant to do for quite some time) instead of looking for interesting foreground elements. Second, this image is darker than I usually keep it, but I did that on purpose. With the setting sun, I wanted to retain the drama of the scene and focus on emphasizing those golden highlights of the setting sun. Lastly, I'd say the framing is something I've been working on more lately. I didn't want to fill my frame with too much clear sky because - let's be honest - it's boring. Instead, I wanted a somewhat solitary image, with the lifeguard station being the major emphasis leading into the sunstar and the vast ocean beyond.

I can't wait to hear what stands out to you! And if you aren't noticing what stands out, but rather what you think I should have done - be sure to put that in the comments, too!

If you want to make your photos more unique or stand out, focus on framing. Instead of taking just another shot of the Manhattan Beach Aquarium, I stepped further back into a parking lot, where these palm trees created vertical lines with a little tree top at the edge of the image. Doing this not only framed the aquarium a little differently than what is commonly seen but also added depth with those foreground trees.

If you get tunnel vision on compositions when shooting like I do, then remember this simple tip. Don’t just look for compositions at eye level - or even ground level - look up! Sometimes, those trees, buildings, or other tall subjects create beautiful compositions - especially when paired with some nice pink and purple skies. Share this post with a friend that you think will benefit from this tip!
