Have you ever walked into a store and just...stopped?

That was me at Shabahang Rug Gallery.

Hand-knotted rugs hanging floor to ceiling. Stacks of them waist-high. Colors I don't have names for. And when you get close (you will get close), the detail in every single knot is truly stunning. The quality and workmanship in that showroom is something you have to see in person. My photos don't do it justice, and I'm the one who took them.

Then there's Bruce Shabahang, the owner, who might be the NICEST guy in Brookfield. He's already invited me back for Turkish coffee. Bruce, I'm taking you up on that. Soon. :)

Did you know Kohl's has a corporate dentist?

Now you do. Meet Jacob Scholz, and yes, that smile is exactly what you'd hope for from a dentist. (I can't take credit for it. I just lit it well! 📸)

Jacob needed a headshot ready for anything, so we ran one session across three looks: classic gray, traditional portrait, and navy. Same Jacob, three backgrounds, whatever the moment calls for.

Congrats on the new role, Jacob. Kohl's smiles are in good hands.

GASP!

Have you seen the September issue of Brookfield City Lifestyle yet? It's the Style Issue and it's safe to say that I'm completely in love with this cover. 💍

Just look at that sparkle! These rings are stunning enough on their own, but stacked together like that with the light catching every stone? I could drool over this, I mean, stare at this all day.

This is Howden's headshot day back in January, and yes, that is a puppy parked right in the middle of my setup.

She belongs to Andrew and came along for the day, and she spent his whole session lying between my light stands watching him. Never moved, never made a peep, just kept her eyes on her person the entire time. Good girl.

Then she got scooped up and photographed too. She got her own solo portrait as well, because obviously.

And here's the funny part: this was not the last time I've photographed an office dog. If they show up, they get included. 🐶

Scott is a professional speaker, which means his headshot has a job to do before he ever walks onstage.

It goes on the event page, in the program, in the promo emails, and on every proposal he sends out. People are deciding whether they want to listen to him for an hour based on a photo about the size of a postage stamp. That's a lot to ask of one image, so we made several.

We ran through a light background, a navy background (I love the monochromatic look - so eye-catching!), a blazer, and a warm textured wall, and now he's got the right option for whatever an event organizer needs.

Nervous about getting your headshots taken? You're in good company, because almost everyone who walks into my studio says some version of "I'm not photogenic." Here are three tips that help:

1. Wear the thing you already love. Karen showed up in this lovely emerald green and it was the perfect choice! If you feel good in it, you look good in it, and that shortcut is the real deal.

2. Let's talk first. I never pick up the camera right away. We sit down and talk through who you are and what these photos need to do, which means by the time we start you've already stopped thinking about the camera.

3. Trust that I'll tell you what to do. You do not need to know how to pose. That's my job. Chin, hands, shoulders, all of it, I'll walk you through every bit of it.

Karen's reaction when she saw these on screen made my whole day. I'm so happy for her, too.

New headshots for Stacey, and look at the range she walked out with!

There's a crisp white background for the corporate directory, a blue one because sometimes you need color, and a classic gray. Then there are the ones where she's leaning on the chair looking like she's about to tell you a really good story (she just may have done it right there in the middle of her session!), which is honestly the version of her I really adore.

You don't have to choose between polished and personable. Bring a couple of options and we'll get you both.
