Isn't she lovely? As I was doing household chores the other day, I walked by the picture window and glimpsed what I thought was a large pheasant strolling just out of view. I quickly backtracked after my brain registered the white feathers on her back and realized that what I was looking at was a wi...

15 of 365. The joy of day trips that start before sunrise. If I’m headed to the big city and I time it just right, I can pass through the Badlands while the sun is starting to show off all the colors of eastern Montana. If I can’t be in them, then at least I can enjoy the view. And get in some good thinking time before the world awakes.

I love that there was no one out here, that I could stop without fear to take a picture, and that there’s just a few of us that choose to live here.

13 of 365. The joy of playing basketball in the basement. To be clear, there is very little in this that resembles basketball and the technicals are thrown out like candy. And it isn’t a success unless mom falls down in pain. Play on, friends. Play on.

My record is approximately 2.5 wins to 374 losses. The 2 were forfeits due to illness and what about the half you ask? Well, someone may have changed the rules at the end. I’m still claiming the win. And I’m not fixing the destroyed drop ceiling.

12 of 365. The joy of soft pretzels at sporting events. Okay, so maybe it’s more like a coping strategy, but if there’s a soft pretzel at the concession stand you can count me in. I’ve had some poor excuses over the years like the one at baseball when they were trying to use up last year’s stash. And the one just recently that was served to me in a weird pool of buttery-like substance. Did you know that the Swiss German who emigrated to Pennsylvania are credited with being responsible for the soft pretzel as we know it today? You can take the girl out of Pennsylvania but you can’t take the Pennsylvania out of the girl.

10 of 365. I was supposed to be Christmas shopping but I can’t resist grabbing a REAL book when I hit the store. This one had a $1 coupon and wasn’t something I’d normally read but I’m always up for some interesting advice and some savings. Probably won’t take on all of his habits but there’s always a good time to get the reminder to hustle and dig deep.

3 of 365. The quirks of marriage and farm vehicles. The brakes have been out on this gem for about a week now, blamed on the snow drifts that it undoubtedly was driven through (“hit it hard or you’ll get stuck”). So when I was standing out on the side hill and he drove it downhill at me I got a little concerned. After he kept turning it left towards me, it rolled to a stop and I got in, remarking that “love is driving a pickup without brakes downhill towards your wife.” He laughed. I laughed. Then he laughed again. Turns out that all it needed was a bit of brake fluid. But it was fun to live on the edge for a few days.

I spend a lot of time between Christmas and New Year’s considering the upcoming opportunities in the next 12 months. My word of the year in 2022 was BRAVE. Boundary setting, goal meeting, wellness consciousness, and more. I wrote it everywhere in cursive and big block letters, in little print on the margins of pages. For 2023 I’m choosing JOY and I can’t wait.
It all starts with a happy little bird seed penguin sitting cockeyed on a branch.
